Applying market systems thinking to broaden Field Ready's approach from supply chain solutions for humanitarian relief, to re-building the manufacturing eco-system in extremely hostile environments.Managed teams designing, prototyping and producing items including search and rescue equipment, medical spare parts, home agriculture systems, novel hygiene promotion items, construction materials from recycled plastic, and mobility aids. Undertaken advocacy activities on the role of digital and distributed manufacturing in development, including speaker/panellist for UNDP and IOM innovation days, DFID’s DevNet Talks series, Re:publica and Bond’s 2018 annual conference.

Leading the team seeking to increase employment opportunities in the formal sector for a 3 year DFID-funded M4P urban youth-employment project; currently focused on investment promotion for Mombasa County. Responsible for delivering interventions to:- Establish an investment promotion unit, Mombasa Invest, within the Department of Trade and Investment, Energy and Industry of Mombasa County Government.- Work directly with Mombasa business community to build awareness and use of non-bank financing, and forge linkages with the Nairobi based private equity and impact investment industry. In addition, providing support and coordination across sector teams to engage the private sector.

Advising an M4P focused Market Assistance Program to improve farmer access to quality inputs and services, through creating customer orientated, modern retail practices in the input supply sector.

Kenya

Managed establishment and day to day running of IDP sustainable livelihoods project; worked closely with the National Project Coordinator and trainers from the Government counterpart, overseeing communication with the HQ PM team. In partnership devised and monitored overall strategy and US$1.5m budget.Responsible for all market development activities; focussed on ensuring that IDPs were trained to make items from bamboo that had market potential and were feasible to produce in camp conditions, and developing links with potential traders.

Vietnam

Managed in the field the establishment and initial operation of a ‘centre of excellence’ in industrial competitiveness analysis; a joint program of the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) and UNIDO. Worked closely with the International Cooperation Department of MOIT to establish an ‘Industrial Competitiveness Group’ within the Ministry; physically setting-up the office, identifying and recruiting national staff and a senior international consultant, managing a US$0.6m budget.Trained and Supported Ministry Staff. Developed and adapted training materials and assisted a two week residential training program on the UNIDO Competitive Industrial Performance methodology; oversaw and gave feedback on contributions of the training participants to a first draft of the Vietnam Industrial Competitiveness Report 2010, including wider stakeholder workshop.Drafted the first combined report.

Varried assignments across the Private Sector Development units, including:- Wrote a syllabus in aspects of industrial engineering and Japanese management techniques suitable for rural SMEs for secondary school children in Mozambique. Research work included a mission alone to Uganda. Invited to continue development of the syllabus in Mozambique.- Worked on several aspects of UNIDO’s response to rebuilding agro-industries in Iraq, from contributing to reviews of the strategic framework to designing and analysing market assessments for Vocational Training Centres, all in conjunction with the Iraqi field office.- Assisted Industrial Development Officer in data gathering, analysis and strategy development for new phases of the Industrial Upgrading and Modernization Programme (IUMP).- Developed internal papers for the Agro-Industries Unit, including contributing to their Value Chain manual, a renewed mandate for the wood unit and several concept notes for post-crisis countries.
