After graduating from US Naval Academy as an exchange student from ROK Navy, I have worked on 4 different ships for more than 5 years, with different jobs at each ship. I have since then taken 3 shore tours, and went on 2 months long training while on those shore tours.During those times, I have worked at operations department and also in engineering department as a either squad leader or as a department head. Working during those times have taught me valuable lessons on how to communicate with other people and also how to meet my commander's expectations in hard conditions. There were times when I had to complete a report after night time bridge duty, when a sudden change in plan was required within a day's notice and the ship's engine stopped for unknown reason and I had to react suddenly to keep the ship out of harm's way.Also, due to being able to speak Korean and English fluently, I took part in many combined exercises such as RIMPAC, Talisman Sabre and Cruise Training. At those exercises, I had chance to work with USN, RAN, RSN and other different nations and their branchs, sometimes even for almost a whole year. Communicating each other, who share different custom and culture, on top of a time difference, was a very tough job. It was even harder actually, when all the party came together but at the end all those experiences taught me how to work with people who don't share much similarity. In addition, I was able to acquire a skill on how to work remotely and also internationally.At Naval Academy, I was a lecturer for 2 semesters and I taught Rules of the Road to about 40 graduating class and 100 freshman. I also taught the graduating class how to route a ship on a modern simulator during the cruise training. I learned how to gather knowledge and translate those knowledge to teaching.
