Medical Laboratory Assistant (Haematology & Blood Transfusion)
After undergoing sufficient training under the supervision of a registered biomedical scientist during my unpaid placement year, I also worked bank hours at the same hospital during my free time to help aid the increased workload I witnessed during the COVID-19 pandemic. My colleagues were pleased, and I received an email of recognition from the senior biomedical scientist to thank me for "demonstrating confidence and maturity" during challenging times.- I organised my time by prioritising urgent blood samples and ensuring sample turnaround times were met for all blood samples. During reduced staff hours, I efficiently balanced and organised my time between completing the daily maintenance checks for each analyser for haematology, booking blood samples onto WinPath Enterprise, processing samples onto the appropriate analysers and storing them appropriately before they were safely disposed of. Meanwhile, the biomedical scientists would complete the maintenance checks for blood transfusion and biochemistry as well as verify the test results.- The automated analysers and test kits I've used are the ACLTOP550 analyser, DxH900, Ves-Matic Cube 30, Beckman DxH Slidemaker Stainer II, Mononucleosis DIAQUICK cassette test, the G6PD fluorescent spot test, sickle solubility test, Kleihauer test, ABO/D and reverse grouping card, as well as the Erytra Eflexis analyser. - I completed daily temperature logs to ensure that the temperatures of each storage place, refrigerator, freezer, and blood bank were within the acceptable temperature ranges. If not, I would notify a senior BMS to troubleshoot and rectify the problem. When checking the blood banks, I also checked the emergency units of blood, and I would take any issued units that haven't been used in the last 24 hours back to the laboratory. Unused units were put back in stock in the laboratory so that the units could be issued to another patient when required.
Trainee Biomedical Scientist (Haematology & Blood Transfusion)
Throughout this time I completed my Institute of Biomedical Science registration portfolio and attained valuable training to become a registered biomedical scientist with the HCPC. - During laboratory training, I ensured that I passed the relevant ESR modules and that I was examined and signed off for the relevant competencies before I performed the associated tests and procedures following the relevant standard operating procedure without the supervision of a biomedical scientist. - I’ve gained experience using the in-house systems in the blood sciences laboratory at Bedford Hospital. I entered data accurately using WinPath Enterprise (LIMS) when booking samples at specimen reception after ensuring the patient information on the request form and samples matched alongside relevant sample requirements for the requested haematology and biochemistry tests. - Using Q-Pulse, I’ve completed risk assessments and COSHH assessments, such as for NHSBT weak anti-sera controls, to identify possible hazards as well as to ensure that the appropriate control measures are applied to prevent health hazards and reduce the exposure of hazardous substances to those that can be affected. Additionally, I performed an audit using Q-Pulse for the infectious mononucleosis screening using the DIAQUICK kit.- I participated in the UK NEQAS EQA scheme for the routine coagulation tests of PT, INR, APTT, and Clauss fibrinogen, adhering to the standard operating procedures (SOPs) and interpreting warfarin therapy dosage. The performances I achieved for these tests were within consensus, therefore assuring that the test procedures I used as per SOP were able to produce accurate and valid patient test results and that my interpretation was within the consensus.
Secretary Of The Nepalese Society
- I utilised my written and oral communication skills using e-mails, social media, and speaking at society events and meetings to communicate with the members, the committee, other societies, and the student union to arrange successful events. For instance, we arranged a joint Christmas event with other cultural societies called “December to Remember” which won the award for the "Best Society Event" in 2020 which was awarded by the University of Hertfordshire’s student union. - I organised and took minutes of regular meetings with the committee members and made a record of what was discussed in these meetings to achieve our goals. Additionally, I took control of the society’s social media page to update our members on upcoming events.
Volunteer
- NHS volunteer in the general medicine and elderly care ward as well as the rheumatology ward.- I regularly liaised with nurses and ran errands for them when requested, which aided staff under pressure. Also, I would converse with patients to ease their minds and help them complete their daily meal cards, as well as give feedback to nursing staff on the patient's food intake. The highlight of my role as a volunteer was being able to provide support and companionship to patients.
