The Public Health Hospital System consists of 4 multi-specialty hospitals and the State Office of Pharmacy Services (SOPS). Together, in conjunction with the Department of Public Health, we maintain, protect, and improve the health and well-being of citizens of the Commonwealth. Through a combined focus on delivery of health care services to special populations, education, and research, we serve as a catalyst for change in the health care system by developing and modeling new treatment programs and responding to emerging health needs. Our 4 Joint Commission Accredited hospitals collectively serve an average daily census of over 700 patients. These hospitals serve as a safety net for the Commonwealth’s most vulnerable patients whose complex medical and psychiatric needs include but are not limited to traumatic brain injury, neurologic disorders, and medical-behavioral care. Private sector facilities are not accustomed to providing extended care for patients with multiple co-morbidities. We also support the Department of Corrections through the collaborative management of a secure inpatient unit located at our Jamaica Plain campus (Lemuel Shattuck). The State Office for Pharmacy Services, located on the Tewksbury Hospital campus, provides pharmacy services to 43 health and correctional facilities across the Commonwealth servicing a population in excess of 22,000 lives.

Public programs are best run by dedicated public employees working in the public’s interest. As a result, we believe it is critical that state governments develop a greater capacity to maintain operational control over core public agency functions. We lend our assistance, whether advisory, consultative, or operational, to help states meet that goal. Today HCFS is working in public partnerships with 18 states to enhance health care financing operations.WE ARE:• Committed to improving the provision of health care services for individuals and families nationwide• Determined, as public employees, to protect resources and create sustainable solutions for health care financing• Focused on saving and recapturing state and local health care dollars
