About Susan Kerber

The core business of Material Interface, Inc. is surface analysis and materials engineering consulting. I have a BS in chemistry and a PhD in materials engineering, giving me a unique background for many types of materials issues. I have been named a Fellow of ASM International for industrial surface analysis applications. I am also the current head of ASTM E42.03 committee for Auger electron spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AES/XPS). I have done substantial analysis on stainless steel surfaces, correlating passivation & processing history to defects that include rouging corrosion seen in the pharmaceutical industry. Currently, I am in the final stages of developing a coating process to reduce high temperature oxidation spalling & subsequent material loss of stainless steels, nickel alloys, and aluminum alloys. An additional benefit of the process is improved corrosion resistance in many applications. There are essentially no coatings designed for aggressive industrial environments (2000°F with corrosion) that can be applied in the field and inside complicated geometries.
