I started at Arup in Johannesburg on my return from the UK working as a project & design manager. I enjoyed a wide range of activity (including building, urban design, technical advisory and research projects in multiple African countries) and concluded my journey with Arup as leader of the Planning & Development team (part of the Buildings and Cities group), responsible for a small but dynamic team of project managers and analysts.

The Arup Education Trust was established as a “means to enhance the quality of lives of disadvantaged youths through education and skills development". As a trustee I focused on developing meaningful collaborations, such as with the IDBE programme at Cambridge University (see http://arupcommunity.org/projects/a/arup-education-trust-and-university-of-cambridge-collaboration) and sought to expose the beneficiaries to exciting work opportunities, both at Arup and other like-minded companies.

South Africa

The SA Council for Project and Construction Management Professions is a statutory body under the umbrella of Council for the Built Environment. It is empowered by the act inter alia to register Construction Managers and Construction Project Managers. As the Finance Chairperson I led the Finance committee in its function of supporting the strategic direction of Council during my 4.5 year term, 2009-2014.

London, United Kingdom

As a design manager working for a design & build contractor I took responsibility for the professional teams appointed on d&b projects, as well as preparing contractor's proposals for tenders. I managed the pre-construction phase of the conversion of 166 High Holborn in London from offices to a Travelodge (including survey, extensive investigative works to basement, structure and facade, asbestos identification & removal, design works, planning applications and strip out). I was also based at the All England Lawn Tennis Club (Wimbledon) for over a year, managing a team of designers & specialist sub-contractors working on project 2c (centre court upgrade and retractable roof project).

London, United Kingdom

I was seconded to London Underground and Metronet as a space planner for a portfolio of corporate offices and depots. I planned large fit-outs and significant moves of staff in Canary Wharf and Holborn offices.

Oxford, United Kingdom

I acted as a project manager on a range of projects, including the construction phase of an office fit out in Slough for a property developer; the design and briefing stage of a new orthopaedic research centre for the Nuffield Foundation in Oxford and the specifications for a nationwide rollout of Lexus motor showrooms.

Johannesburg Area, South Africa

I primarily worked on projects in the OR Tambo (formerly Johannesburg International) airport precinct. Some were on site (International Terminal Upgrade) and others in detailed design, bidding and enabling works stage (International Retail Upgrade - including the glazed triangular nodes and Southern Sun Intercontinental hotel). My work included significant stakeholder liaison in a live environment, chairing design meetings, programming & scheduling etc.
