The impact of increasing CO2 has not been fully evaluated in tree species. Six-month-old Morus indica L. trees were grown in open-top chambers (OTC) (with climate control system) under elevated CO2 conditions (550-660 µmol/l) for 4 months. The elevated CO2 grown trees exhibited morphological, physiological, and biochemical alterations when compared to the control ambient plants. Growth analysis in terms of stem diameter and plant height was significantly increased under elevated CO2. The overall foliage biomass exhibited significant increment and a remarkable decrease in specific leaf area (SLA) was recorded in elevated CO2 grown trees when compared to controls. M. indica leaves showed a yellowish tint in elevated CO2 grown conditions when compared to the deep, green-coloured leaves of ambient counterparts. Elevated CO2 increased internal CO2 concentration and net CO2 assimilation rate. Biochemical assays revealed that ribulose-bis-phosphate carboxylase (RuBPCase) activities increased significantly with elevated CO2 treatments. Overall, our data indicated that M. indica exhibited a positive response in terms of growth and biomass productivity under elevated CO2 conditions which can be attributed to enhanced net CO2 fixation and efficient sink capacity.
