In this outward-facing, person-centred role, I work within a small team, supporting the Commissioning Department and representing Channel 4. It is my responsibility to ensure that I both protect and articulate the channel’s interests and standards as a UK network broadcaster, as well as provide expert leadership on C4’s creative engagement across the UK. I am required at all times to demonstrate expert, up-to-date knowledge of all aspects of the ex-M25 independent production sectors for the benefit of my colleagues, as well as maintaining and delivering the very highest level of service to these independent production communities on the broadcaster’s behalf. I have a wide network of industry contacts, which I work hard to nurture, and I spend a substantial proportion of my week travelling around the country to enable top class engagement, striking wherever possible the balance between the needs and pressures of a London-based commercial broadcaster, with those of regional SMEs. I manage a small budget to identify talent and ideas, bringing the best ones into the commissioning system across all genres. I negotiate support funding and co-investment from a range of partnerships. I have spent several years building and maintaining these relationships, which include, but are not limited to, devolved government bodies, screen agencies in the nations and regions, film festivals and educational establishments. It is my responsibility to enhance the relationships between key stakeholders externally in the nations and internally within Channel 4, to create opportunities for deeper engagement and dialogue and to find new avenues and means for creative and financial collaboration.
