I've written about the growth of "pot-repreneurs" in the emerging legal cannabis industry, and the old-guard industries, such as the impact of fracking on oil and gas exploration companies in the United States. I've covered the impact of water scarcity, and written about the attempts of philanthropists to address its consequences in drought-stricken regions of the world. I've gone behind closed doors at a luxury hotel to tell readers what it takes to create the perfect guest experience, and spent weeks in China tracking down that country's efforts to create a consuming middle class for an award-winning multi-media series. I've spent a lot of time unwinding the complexities of Wall Street, from its jargon to its financial products, and penned a book about the root causes of the 2008 financial crisis. I write about mutual funds, money funds, hedge funds, venture capital funds and private equity funds -- and know why they differ and why all are critical to the way the system functions. If it involves money or business, I've probably written about it. My writing has appeared in publications as diverse as Art + Auction, INC, Institutional Investor, MarketWatch, ForeignPolicy.com, the Wall Street Journal, the Guardian, Ocean Drive, Gotham and The Fiscal Times. I've written about philanthropy, the art market, corporate social responsibility and socially-responsible investing, the world of the "quants" and derivatives, the SEC and investment regulation, and myriad other topics.

My job? To decode financial services jargon and chat about the investment and personal finance topics of the day, twice a week. The goal? To help readers really understand how markets work. I still will contribute occasional freelance articles.

I've written a number of features and columns for a variety of Niche Media's magazine titles -- Gotham, Boston Common, Hamptons and Ocean Drive. These have included a story about fashion designers' attempt to save New York's iconic fashion district, a profile of the 150-year-old Bacardi rum business and the family who still runs it (along with details of an international cocktail competition!); a look at the town of Sagaponack (the Hamptons' hottest locale) and a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the Taj Boston, the iconic hotel formerly known as the Ritz Carlton.

I have covered a wide array of topics for Barron's including cover stories that have ranged from the (now defunct) commodities market supercycle to how to raise privileged kids who don't behave like spoiled brats. Stories have included profiles of mutual fund managers and private banks, ahead-of-the-pack looks at new companies like Ancestry.com and the perennial "top advisors" articles. For the an annual special report, over the years I've talked about philanthropic initiatives with everyone from Steve Case and Howard Buffett to the founder of "Room to Read" , a nonprofit building libraries in countries like Laos.

Published in June 2010, with the paperback edition scheduled for release in June 2011, was named as one of the best non-fiction books of 2010 by the Washington Post (which called it "exceptionally lucid") and described as "vital reading" by Canada's National Post.

Started off in Toronto covering corporate news within a variety of industries, as well as Canadian financial markets. Moved on to the Money & Investing section in New York, responsible for coverage of the commodities market, the bond market and ultimately the US stock market. Moved to London where I wrote about European financial markets; my final beat was corporate finance, helping to debut the "Deals and Dealmakers" column. Frequent contributor to the "Heard on the Street".
