Huws Gray acquired the Civils and Lintels business and consolidated their acquisitions, creating a Group Environmental, Sustainability & Quality Role.

My current position is both a hands on and strategic role, giving me the opportunity to direct, influence and manage safety culture, driving the business forward.

My position at NPL was a strategic role with control to drive the HSE part of the business forward whilst remaining operationally hands on across a number of sites. Key achievements include :• Creating an ISO14001 environmental management system template across the different waste business’s• Implemented an audit schedule to assess compliance and identify non-conformance across EHS• Managed the IMS renewal at a large waste facility • Resolved HSE, EA and SEPA enforcement intervention across the group • Undertook project work to manage permit variations and permit applications for new business streams – bioremediation and bespoke hazardous waste permit variations • Introduced process risk assessments • Developed a training card programme to deliver site based training (toolbox talks)

Self employed HSE consultant in the Foundry / Heavy Industry Sector - key achievements have been: • Addressed non-compliance issues with the site B permit, avoiding Local Authority prosecution.• Developed a working relationship with the regulator• Written and introduced an environmental management system that was ISO14001 certified (September 2015) by LRQA.• Implemented documentation and systems needed to support the A2 application required for business development.• Undertook gap audit of H&S compliance and addressed a number of health and safety issues on site. • Introduced a longer term staged health and safety improvement programme to address non- compliance and develop safety culture. • Identified site responsibilities and communicated ownership of safety, integral in developing safe systems and safety management on site.

I joined the Company at a time when a Health and Safety Executive prosecution was pending. My arrival was subsequently followed by several visits from the HSE and a number of improvement notices being issued. There were non-compliance issues with the A2 Environmental Permit conditions compounded further by non-adherence to the ISO14001 Management System which was due for re-certification after its first 3 year cycle. The role has been challenging but the rewards have been enjoyable. My main achievements have been:• Turning a negative relationship with the HSE into a positive one.• Gaining re-certification of the ISO 14001 standard and re-building the trust of the permit regulator. • Successful compliance management of the A2 Environmental Permit • Working within a manufacturing sector in a high risk environment. • Managing a team of three across 3 factory sites with over 300 employees. • Management of a £180K annual budget. • Implementation of a staged Health, Safety and Environmental Strategy to take the Firth Rixson Metals business forward by achieving key milestones.

The role was geographically and technically diverse, covering over 60 waste management facilities that were EA regulated via PPC permitting. The sites included landfill, chemical treatment, recycling, composting, collection and incineration. I have held a number of safety/environmental management roles within the Company as a result of re-structure. From 2010 to 2012 I undertook a Health and Safety Projects role which gave me the opportunity to expand my management competences, overseeing the work of others (both in house and external) the role covered.
