I ensure that the BVCA is at the forefront of crucial analysis of trends and issues surrounding venture capital and private equity and the impact of the industry on the economy.I work closely with external researchers and build relations with industry trade bodies, member research teams, think tanks and research consultancies to identify areas for partnership and enhance the BVCA’s research offering for our members - I am particularly interested in potential collaborations around Diversity & Inclusion and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) topics. My team and I also deliver the BVCA’s two annual flagship research reports – the Report on Investment Activity and Performance Measurement Survey.

By training I am an economist and have undertaken a variety of consulting, regulatory, strategy and economics projects, mainly with telecoms, media and technology organisations. My particular specialism is valuations for pensions schemes and companies with pension plans. In my pensions specialist capacity I have worked with trustees, their advisors and plan providers to enable them to reach objective, fair and binding decisions about the scheme they represent in fulfilment of their trustee or director responsibilities. Particular areas of focus using my valuation and pension regulation knowledge are:• Establishing the fair allocation of assets to a scheme when organisational structure changes• Enabling an organisation to be compliant with pension regulation• Advising on the likely ability of an employer to meet pension commitmentsI have also contributed to the debate on pension regulation at the European level via an article on valuing employer covenant. See below.Major engagements include:- Enabling the trustees of a £4bn pension scheme to maximise the potential recovery from insolvency (via use of the Pension Regulator’s moral hazard powers)- Providing an independent valuation of assets offered to a pension scheme as security, which enhanced the overall pension scheme covenant. (via an Asset Backed Contribution structure)- Enabling a pension scheme to get a good deal and protect access to value during a transaction by providing an understanding of the access to value before and after the deal so that any detriment could be mitigated through cash payments or other mechanisms
