Joined Carbonite as its 5th employee and led nearly every part of the business at some point. Built and scaled the marketing team and revenue engine from 0 to >1M paying customers (nearly $100M top line). Having lead marketing + sales since founding, this was my 'second tour of duty.' In this role, I led a successful turnaround of Carbonite’s Product, Engineering and Customer support groups which had been in decline since the IPO. After having built Carbonite’s top line from zero to nearly $100M, I was asked by the CEO to take on this very different role which included responsibility for 150 engineers in five locations across the US, Europe and India as well as our 250-person technical support operation in Maine. My turnaround strategy had two components: talent-related issues (recruiting, management and morale) and reconciling our product strategy with changes in the market.

Until this point, Carbonite's business had been built on one (consumer) product and growth had been fueled entirely by the marketing engine we had built in the first four years. In order to expand our product line, we had to professionalize the Product function which had been loosely organized since day one. I recruited a seasoned VP Product and brought in a well-known Silicon Valley consultant to rebuild the function (people and methodology). Together, we broadened the product line (adding SMB) and re-packaged our offerings to accelerate top-line growth as we approached the 2011 IPO. I eventually took responsibility for the Consumer business, handing off our SMB group to a new hire.

In this role, I built the team and marketing engine that drove Carbonite’s growth from zero to $60M in bookings and nearly 1 million paying subscribers, putting Carbonite at #10 on the Inc. 500. As de facto head of Product, I worked to imbue the company with a customer-centric attitude. I also learned to master the recruitment of high-performance teams and worked hard to make this a core competence of the company.
