In September 2008, I was promoted as Clinical Scientist from the post of Chief Laboratory Technologist. I am overseeing the Cord Blood Laboratory Unit of Dubai Cord Blood & Research Centre (DCRC). DCRC is a government facility & its mission is to support patients in need of a stem cell transplant by banking umbilical cord blood from the nationals and residents of the UAE accompanied with continuing quality improvement in an environment that fosters cellular therapy and research. The following are some of my responsibilities: Supervision of biological operations related to stem cell isolation, stem cell culturing and cryopreservation techniques. Analyze options and develop research strategies to support the DCRC overall strategic direction. Organize Cord Blood Unit shipment to different transplant facilities around the world. Manage the periodical maintenance of the equipments. Prepare orders and inventories for reagents and other consumables to ensure continuous availability. Prepare and analyze monthly and annual statistics. Support Laboratory Manager to educate all individuals (Patients, Physicians, Donors, University Students & Public) about cord blood & stem cell donation importance. In conjunction with the Laboratory Manager, select relevant events and conferences to keep abreast with the continuing advancements of stem cell science and research. Train and orient new appointees and trainees for cord blood stem cell processing and supervise work of students posted in the laboratory. Overseeing review of Standard Operating Procedures, document control, internal quality control and external quality assessment and ensuring that the laboratory meets the requirements for accreditation by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT). To identify areas and particular projects where there is the potential for improvement of quality to the benefit of the service provided by the DCRC.
