In 2014, I taught a program to female students of middle and high school levels about the history and roles of women in South Florida television news. The program included hands-on projects, speakers from the television news business and field trips to the Wolfson Archives and Univision studios. Their project was a newspaper front page about their experiences. The program for 2015 covered the Miami art scene. The students were able to analyze and critique artwork from around the world and closer to home. They learned about the famous international art museums and festivals and had a chance to visit Vizcaya, PAMM, ICA and the gallery and public art of Little Havana. Their project was a magazine called "Art Is."The 2016 program was about the local food community. The students learned about healthy eating, visited the Miami Culinary Institute and incorporated family food traditions into two projects - a potluck luncheon and a food "zine." The 2017 program was about technology. The students looked at careers in technology, visited FIU's "Wall of Wind" and conducted projects about female pioneers in technology. The 2018 program has a focus on the worldwide education of girls and women. The students have looked at the tools of education from ancient storytelling to online courses and social media. They visited the Miccosukee Indian Village and Florida International University and have been putting together projects about "Icons" - women leaders around the world in various professions throughout history. In 2019, community assistance was the primary topic. "GEM Helping Hands" saluted local women's clubs, who had played early roles in reaching out, and came up with ideas for community projects for the future.
