About Tadhg Mahon
I am currently working as a crystallography scientist and solid state researcher at Ardena, where we apply our expertise on behalf of our clients to aid in the process of drug development. We work on all aspects of the solid state development of drug molecules from polymorph screens to solubility studies and scale up research. We also perform crystallographic and other solid state characterisation of prospective drug molecules to ensure optimum performance of new drugs and help develop the IP landscape, prior to final development. I am involved in all aspects of this work from planning and executing the experimental work to reporting results and interacting with clients. After defended my PhD thesis at the ICMCB in Bordeaux, France I carried out postdoctoral work at the aerospace engineering department of the Technical University of Delft, funded by SABIC. My work There revolved around the development of flexible piezoelectric composites based on lead free ceramics embedded in a polymer matrix. I focused on two main aspects: the design of a ceramic phase to produce the optimum composites and the optimisation of the synthesis routes in order to produce the best composites possible. These materials were developed for eventual use in haptic feedback, sensors, and energy harvesting devices with prototype devices developed from my work. I also supervised a team of masters and PhD students as well as participated in the teaching activites of the material science team. My PhD work concerned the effect of light element insertion on the structural and magnetic properties of intermetallic systems. My research interests concern the relationship between structure, composition, and properties for the development of functional materials. In particular with a top-down focus to produce materials for real-world applications that fit the demands of today's world. My role has recently expanded to include more teaching and supervision of students working in materials science in the faculty. I teach a course on smart materials for sensing applications and supervise 2 masters students and a PhD student.

Senior Scientist
CurrentAs a senior scientist Ardena Solid State Research I am responsible for planning, executing and reporting the material science projects that we run in support of external and internal clients. This includes method developments and ongoing material science studies to assist in the development of drug product formulations and scale up of drug production to larger scales. As part of my current tasks I am also working to establish GMP XRPD capabilities at our group, deepen our knowledge base on our in-house techniques and broaden the scope of the services we can offer to clients by identifying new analytical techniques which will fit well with business platform.
Crystallographer
As crystallographer and materials chemist at Ardena I am focused on the characterisation, screening and process development of new and developing drug molecules. The work involves the search for new polymorphs, investigation of the structure, stability, and physical chemistry of the molecules prior to their further development for application by pharmaceutical companies. Beyond this I also assist customers with scale up of production, control of the crystallisation process and development of drug product formulations through our material science outsourcing facilities that I have established.I am also involved in the wider culture of Ardena through participation in focus groups on SHE policy, membership on the local works council, training other colleagues in lab techniques and as an emergency response officer.
Postdoctoral Researcher
I carried out postdoctoral work at the aerospace engineering department of the Technical University of Delft, funded by SABIC. My work there revolved around the development of flexible piezoelectric composites based on lead free ceramics embedded in a polymer matrix. These materials are being developed for eventual use as actuators, sensors, and haptic feedback devices. The increased flexibility of composites over ceramic materials makes them uniquely interesting for flexible piezoelectric applications and the high depolarisation temperatures of the ceramic components allow higher operating temperatures than the piezoelectric polymers. In particular my work focused on the design, synthesis and scale up of the ceramic part as well as optimisation of the composite's microstructure to yield optimum properties. This functioned as the initial stage of the industrial R&D process and, by working closely with industry we are able to focus on the requirements of application and carry out materials design from the top-down, always with a focus on application.My PhD work concerned the effect of light element insertion on the structural and magnetic properties of intermetallic systems. My research interests concern the relationship between structure, composition, and properties for the development of functional materials. In particular I am interested in changing how we design and search for new functional materials, to remove as much of the random chance inherent in materials discovery by understanding the link between basic structural elements and the final material properties.
Doctoral Student
My thesis focused on the effect of light element insertion on the structural and magnetic properties of intermetallic compounds. In particular I have focused on the materials crystalising in the CeFeSi (PbFCl) and CeScSi (La2Sb) structure types and the insertion of carbon and hydrogen into these materials. My work spans the synthesis of the materials by intermetallic methods, insertion of carbon and/or hydrogen and the structural, electronic and magnetic investigation of the resulting compounds by X-ray and neutron diffraction, conductivity measurements as well as magnetic characterisation using a SQUID magnetometer. In conjunction with these techniques, I also used microstructural techniques such as SEM and compositional analysis in the form of EDX and WDS.
Stagiaire Masters
I worked as a research intern at the ICMCB-CNRS in Bordeaux, France, investigating a new pseudo-binary intermetallic phase for its magnetocaloric properties as a potential magnetic refrigerant. The materials were synthesised using standard intermetallic synthesis routes and characterised by powder X-ray diffraction, magnetic measurements using a S.Q.U.I.D. Magnetometer, Electron microprobe analysis for phase composition determination and heat capacity measurements. While working here I learned how to use the Fullprof software suite to analyse X-ray powder diffraction patterns by the LeBail and Rietveld methods.
