I have had no particular professional experience but have been a part on an architectural internship at Nayyar Ali Dada & Associates, one of the leading architecture companies in Pakistan. I joined this internship in the summer of 2010 and it lasted for a month and a half from starting from June 17th till August 3rd. I was the only intern there who was from high school, the rest were either in their third or fourth year of college. I am particularly proud of this fact even though I only had a month and a half to learn what I learnt. I learnt about what architecture actually is and how it is based on the efforts of not just one person. Group work was one of the main things I learned from the internship. I worked mainly under the two head architects of the firm. They taught me different things like for e.g. floor planning, section and elevation planning’s of buildings and of public areas such as the F9 Park in Islamabad. To learn architecture and its workings, firstly you have to have to know the basics, knowing how to draw which includes perspective drawing and knowing math. Secondly you have to have a good idea of what kind of an artist u want to be, your work should define who you are as a person. As a society we rely a lot on technology and architecture is no different. I learnt about new architectural software called 'Google Sketch up', and it allowed me to enhance my knowledge on how modern architects get the job done. Of course there are many others like the software I learnt but I wasn’t at the internship long enough to learn how they are used. Cataloguing was also one of the many things I learnt at the firm. I learnt that there are a huge number of materials you can use while designing buildings and under which category every material falls. I received a certificate upon my leave and I am very thankful for this wonderful opportunity as it was one of the main things that made me want to become a successful architect one day.
