Investigated ceramic materials, composites, and interlayers for ballistic protection in vehicle armours, with a large focus on shock wave propagation and material failure mechanisms.This work was predominantly self-led, involving the research, planning, design, manufacturing of samples, and execution of experimental work. However, a great deal of communication and planning with both external companies and internal staff was required to ensure timeframes were met and progress was maintained.I gained hands-on experience with high-velocity testing facilities, ceramic additive manufacturing, SEM analysis, CT scanning, image processing (ImageJ), composite mixing, testing standards, brazing, adhesives / bonding methods, and many other research-based skills.A key part of this research focused on the additive manufacturing of engineering ceramics, understanding the limitations and developing novel architectures for their use in controlling shock waves. A critical requirement was also the understanding of material bonding and the interaction at these interfaces.

Lead and coordinate a team of trained soldiers in the delivery of initial training for new soldiers into the Army Reserves, taking them from civilians to qualified soldiers.This involves acting as the main problem solver, ensuring that the current training runs smoothly whilst preparing for future training and courses.

Managed the career development, skills development, welfare, and training of up to 15 aviation-trained Reservist soldiers alongside my full-time PhD at Cranfield. This required mid-week work (and the accompanying complexities / forward-planning required from this) and a commitment of at least one weekend per month.Alongside this (and later taking over fully in these roles as the Operations Officer), I planned local and wider training, assisted in workforce planning, and acted as the communication link at multiple levels of command for the unit.This role saw me mobilise as part of a Military Aid to Civil Authorities tasking, supporting Border Force.Beyond this, I attended many training courses in personnel management, aviation, risk management. Further to this, I was involved in planning exercises aimed at 1,000+ personnel, alongside maintaining all other relevant and annual training required in the military.

Conducted research into the effective recycling and reuse of powders, notably 316L Stainless Steel, for various applications in additively manufactured products. This led to a widely published paper, available here: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0959652620321247?via%3Dihub Working with academics in the Department of Engineering at Lancaster University and in collaboration with Croft Additive Manufacturing, I explored methods of upcycling end of life powders. The project had both a metallurgy and environmental focus, developing SEM analysis, image processing (ImageJ), wider engineering process understanding, and additive manufacturing skills.

Alongside studying, I learnt how to be an infantry solider with the Exeter University Officer Training Corps (EUOTC). I later re-joined the UOTC with Liverpool and Lancaster University Officer Training Corps (LUOTC). This culminated with me attending Sandhurst to become an Officer in the Army Reserves.

Delta K Explosive Engineering Systems Ltd. is an explosives technology company providing research, design, prototyping, test, assessment, and evaluation services for systems driven by energetic materials.I assisted the Managing Director of the company on a variety of projects, including the setting up and conducting of range trails, assembling products, and finding solutions to problems encountered during trials / with products.I also assisted the company through conducting research into the aerodynamics of Delta K's flagship product, the DeltaLancer projectile. This sought to identify the drag properties, roll rate, and damping ratio of the projectile, utilising a combination of wind tunnel experimental work and CFD techniques.

Underwent a PADI Divemaster internship in Tenerife for 9 weeks, progressing from an Open Water Diver to a professional standard, accruing over 70 dives. For the last 2-3 weeks, I was an acting Divemaster for the company.The experience gave me further customer interaction, teamwork and problem solving skills in new environments where verbal communication was impossible, crisis management/prevention experience and knowledge of how to run a dive centre.

I was responsible for up to 46 guests per week. My duties included assisting guests to and from the airport weekly, giving them information about the resort and services available, dealing with customer complaints, general administrative work and organising/hosting après events. This developed patience, problem solving and strong communication skills, working both as a team and individual.

This was done through focus groups and a self-designed questionnaire, providing a wealth of information to the college. This data was then analysed and compiled into a report for concise yet comprehensive communication of the findings.

I encouraged students between the age of 11-18 to consider university as an option, or directly recruit to the University of Exeter. This involved Open Days, Offer-Holder Visit Days, attending information fairs across the country, helping with incoming school visits and working on residential courses for 16-17 year old students.Much of my work took place promoting the engineering department by showing students the facilities in the building, delivering an engineering student life presentation and by being an approachable point of contact throughout the students' visits to Exeter.Residential courses took place over a number of days or weeks, ensuring that the students were where they needed to be on time, aiding with and organising activities/entertainment for them. It also entailed looking after the welfare of the students, being on call overnight in case of emergency.
