Placement Student - Next-Generation Sequencing Department
Current•Year-long placement within the Next-Generation Sequencing Department of Randox. •Routinely carried out clinical testing of patient samples undergoing genetic testing. •The main genetic testing carried out was to identify pathogenic variants linked with cancer or cardiomyopathies. Competent in performing whole process from genomic DNA extraction and quality control, to library preparation and sequencing. Introduced to data analysis and variant reporting using the Fabric genomics software. This also involved collaborating with other departments, eg. bioinformatics.•Completed Master's project into the validation of the NextSeq 2000 sequencer for use within the lab for a higher throughput of samples.•While introduced to many different sequencers, including the NovaSeq 6000 and NextSeq 2000, I was most proficient using the MiSeq. Routinely used the SeqStudio Genetic Analyzer to sequence internal plates.•Introduced to genotyping assays using microarray technology which looked at SNPs specific to nutrition and lifestyle traits.•Introduced to Olink proteomics to analyse thousands of protein biomarkers in one assay for different sample conditions.•Took part in training members of staff in laboratory processes.•Had introduction to primer design which piqued interest in this skill. •Took on extra responsibilities within lab including producing and routinely carrying out a stock take.•Maintained good laboratory practice throughout all lab work, including preventing cross-contamination, correct use of PPE and adhering to all health and safety protocols.•Participated in UKAS off-site audit.•Used my time-management and organisation skills to successfully balance working full-time and completing my Master's year of University.
