Learning Resources Intern
Oxford, United Kingdom
The whole purpose of this post was for me to gain an overview and involvement in the operation of the directorate. This involved IT projects, business cases, financial management, administration and library processes. There were two main duties that I was involved in. The first one was Operations, and part of this was to work with introductions of new ways of working in IT (ITIL) – to support with process documentation and analysis of current situation. I gave some input to best-in-class IT services from a student perspective. I observed and contributed to business cases (e.g. virtualisation) and operational planning. I also contributed to improvement of L.R. Processes, for example, identifying tasks which could be done more efficiently by deploying simple software solutions. I also helped support investigation and responded to Freedom of Information requests. The second duty I was involved with was Administration, and part of this was giving assistance with L.R. Survey utilising recent user perspective. I have helped with the 2010 inventory check. I also was responsible for calculating staff annual leave and entering on directorate diaries. Another thing I was solely responsible for was processing Bodleian forms for the university library.I have had many training sessions, one of them being finance, which I found extremely interesting and learnt a lot from this; about the difference between capital and revenue, budgeting, working capital, return on investment and much more. I learnt a lot about the running of the university as opposed to being a student. I have learnt by being part of the staff that are not teaching, that they are not appreciated as much as they should be.
