My passion for science began during my childhood, although I did not truly understand it then. I have struggled with allergies for my entire life and had to have surgeries and endure years of allergy shots to mitigate my symptoms. I had always wondered why I had allergies and what caused my sensitivities to certain plants, animals, and foods. Naturally, I turned to Google for all of those answers, and as expected, with answers followed more questions. I had so many questions about my allergies–questions I continued to type into the Google search bar–and certain phenomena that occurred within the human body that scientists haven't been able to explain yet. It was at this point I realized I enjoyed the journey of exploring an unknown field and began to consider a career in research. When the notion of going into medicine first formed in my brain, I wanted to engage directly with patients, fostering a solid patient-doctor relationship and confidence and trust between those who are ill and the treatments that can restore their health. However, I was also fascinated by the advancements in medicine throughout the millennia and wanted to engage in research to expand biomedical knowledge, specifically on human genetic diseases. I realized that I wanted to be the doctor he would come face to face with to discuss his treatment plan and the doctor in the lab working on more effective, efficient, and less painful treatments. I aspire to become a physician-scientist because I wish to engage in research and facilitate its translation into a clinical setting. Obtaining an MD/PhD will allow me to engage within the medical field in this unique way.
