Thomas has a Degree of Master of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering. His research involved assessing the live fire training environment of local firefighters with the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and how the minimum requirement for firefighter garments can be used to determine firefighter tenability. He has been awarded the IFE Level 3 Diploma in Fire Science and Fire Safety from the Institution of Fire Engineers. His current memberships are with the Institution of Fire Engineers as an Associate Member and with the Society of Fire Protection Engineers as a Professional Member. He has successfully completed post graduate studies in fire behaviour at Stellenbosch University.
