The most powerful way to map its interior is using seismological tools – energy from earthquakes that travels… Show more I work on the development and application of different techniques using tools from both direct seismic and late coda-correlation wavefields to probe the Earth’s innermost regions, starting with the physical properties of the inner core (IC). The IC comprises nearly 0.7% of the volume of the Earth, making investigations of its physical and chemical properties extremely challenging. The most powerful way to map its interior is using seismological tools – energy from earthquakes that travels through its structure. However, the lack of high-quality data sensitive to the bulk IC structure imposes a big challenge to resolving many of its physical parameters, such as its anisotropy in P-wave velocity, and its 1D shear-wave velocity model. My research is motivated by the potential of innovative data processing techniques for analyzing seismic waveforms, which can unlock hidden signals obscured by noise and shed light in the core's evolution history. During my PhD I also investigate regional and local upper mantle seismic discontinuities on a global scale. My aim is to provide insights on temperature and compositions at those depths with implications for our understating of mantle convection. Before my PhD, I came to Australia to visit RSES and do a research internship. That was my first experience working with seismology, and undoubtedly, I faced a steep learning curve as I had to familiarise myself with many new concepts, in particular coding. That was my first experience working with seismology, and undoubtedly, I faced a steep learning curve as I had to familiarise myself with many new concepts, in particular coding. During this research, I used a new probabilistic framework to perform a highly efficient joint inversion of receiver functions and surface wave dispersion data to investigate the shear-wave velocity models beneath receivers in the Borborema Province (BP), northern region of Brazil. Although our geological interpretation is limited, the importance of this work was to test a new methodology of inversion based on Bayesian inference, considering confidence bounds which is a really novel contribution from this approach, and to concentrate our goal on the Moho structure resolution that came to be, in most cases, in excellent agreement with results from independent studies.
