Senior Project Manager

ORACLE, MASTERCARD, SMITH & NEPHEW, SALESFORCE, TRANSURBANFollowing the successful completion of the Afriquia project, I transitioned to managing a number of smaller brand implementation projects for blue-chip clients. The scope and duration of these projects varied according to specific client requirements. An opportunity also came up to travel extensively in China, on a technical fact finding mission with the Transurban client. In addition to my PM role I stepped in as operations manager overseeing the smooth running of all Harkess-Ord projects. Managing smaller projects involved: • Working closely with clients to understand and service their needs. • Managing all operational aspects of these projects.• Producing schedules, costings and scope documentation. • Ensuring tight commercial management of each project. • Managing performance by tracking KPI’s and report findings to stakeholders.• Arranging project meetings, internally, with clients, contractors and suppliers.• Monitoring and managing all contractors, consultants and suppliers within each project. Operational responsibilities were: • Establishing and implementing company policies, objectives and procedures. • Capacity planning, allocation and resource management. • Tracking and monitoring project progress from initiation to completion. There is a great sense of achievement seeing smaller projects through to successful fruition. Client satisfaction is always my main consideration in project delivery.

AFRIQUIA Morocco’s largest petroleum retailer launched a new brand and retail forecourt identity. Harkess-Ord’s challenge was to engineer all of the brand elements for a new forecourt and car services offering and to manage the brand implementation and construction phases of the project. Budget €20mil. As Project Principal I was responsible for all operational aspects of the project. Responsibilities and achievements: Engineering the brand - Spearheaded a multidisciplinary team of engineers and designers to make the brand a reality. An aerofoil shaped canopy design required sophisticated structural engineering. Specialist manufacturing was procured in Spain and France resulting in complex import, logistics and warehousing. A product suite of 600 3D brand elements was manufactured. Managed a global supply chain, achieving a 20% cost savings for the client. Forecourt Reconstruction - Overseeing complex civil engineering due to the increase of the overall canopy footprint, resulting in larger foundation sizes, causing the re-direction of fuel lines. A phased programme allowed for continuous trading throughout the build programme, with minimal loss to revenue. Car Services Facility Redevelopment - In close collaboration with project architects, responsible for the redesign of these facilities to ensure a footprint increase of minimum 25% per site. Obtaining final sign-off of these schemes from the client and other stakeholders. Budgetary control and appointment of main contractors. Managing the build programme and fit-out. Client and stakeholder management - Strategic planning of the project. Maintaining strong stakeholder relationships were pivotal to the success of the project. Close collaboration with client with progress and steering committee meetings held in Casablanca. Detailed progress reporting was required and regularly communicated to all stakeholders. An extensive brand and construction project was delivered across prestigious 100 sites.

Construction Manager

New Zealand

ZENERGYHarkess-Ord was selected to manage the rebrand of Shell’s New Zealand network of 220 service stations and 90 truck-stops in seven months. I was part of a core management team sent over to New Zealand to assist with setting up a local project team based in Auckland. We ensured that all systems, processes and procedures were in place for the smooth running of such a complex project. Following the set-up phase my role changed to construction management. It was a highly pressured work environment, with the conversion on average of 12 sites per week.Responsibilities were: • Scheduling of all planned site works. • Managing of multiple contractors such as electricians, decorators, building contractors and sign companies to ensure all contractual obligations were met. • Making safety inspections, ensuring construction and site safety, including management of hot-works. • Inspecting work progress to ensure it is up to standard. • Final close-out and sign-off of all works. The ZEnergy brand was delivered on time and under budget. The project was recognised as the largest project of its kind in New Zealand for over a decade. The project gave me an in-depth understanding of Petrol Forecourt redevelopment that paved the way for my role as Project Principal on Afriquia.

ANGLO AMERICANFollowing the rebrand of Anglo American by Interbrand in 2010 and the implementation of their corporate workplace branding scheme at their UK head-office, a global roll-out strategy was established by Harkess-Ord across Anglo American’s network of mines, industrial plants and offices, beginning with a worldwide site evaluation programme covering 120 locations. The EMEA region constituted 80% of the project scope due to Anglo American’s strong relationship with South Africa. I was fortunate to be based in South Africa to oversee project operations there. Responsibilities were: • Managing and training a team of eight surveyors to survey vast Anglo American mines and facilities.• Leading brand workshops for business unit managers of Anglo American Coal, Platinum and Iron Ore to educate them about the new brand and the impact that the brand implementation will have on their business operations.• Supplier management, working closely with Tri-Cor SA to engineer and manufacture brand elements for nine prestigious launch sites.• Managing and coordinating the installation of these sites. After the successful implementation of the EMEA launch sites I returned to the UK. It was a fantastic opportunity for me to work in my home country.

APPLE (Japan)The SIS (Shop in Shop) concept was created for the integration of Apple retail into department stores worldwide. A £3 million pilot project was launched in Japan with three sites identified to receive this groundbreaking concept. This gave me the opportunity to work and live in Japan and experience the admirable work ethic of the Japanese first hand. The implementation of an “Apple Shop in Shop” retail environment in Japan’s busiest electronic retail stores (BIC, BEST and Yodobashi) presented the team with unique requirements, such as all elements had to be designed for seismic activity (health and safety was a major concern), and rapid implementation because of an available overnight slot of only 8 hours for strip-out, shop-fit and merchandising. These constraints put major pressure on me as project manager as there was no room for error. The success of the project depended on the following:• I established a close working relationship with Nomura Kougei (one of the largest construction contractors in Japan) that was responsible for the manufacture of all elements and shop-fitting. Their work ethic was unquestionable. • Design co-ordination between Apple Cupertino, FITCH London and Nomura Japan had to be faultless to ensure the latest design changes were incorporated in manufacture, set against tight deadlines. • I formed a strong bond with the client locally ensuring a perfect synergy between shop-fitting and merchandising, that followed the build. It was a great achievement to implement the three “Apple Shop in Shop” stores at BIC Yurakucho Tokyo, BEST Fukuoka and BIC Tenjin, especially because of the exceptional conditions imposed on us as a team. The successful implementation of the concept ensured a substantial increase in sales revenue for these stores. I have found the experience overall very rewarding. Japan is a unique and special place to live and work in.
