I served as the Policy Director for Sales and Excise Taxes in the Department’s Policy Bureau of the Research and Policy Division. I provided subject matter expertise to policymakers, stakeholders, other agencies, and taxpayers through outreach and education. I drafted legislation primarily in the areas of state government, environmental protection, and professional licensure. I also provided legal advice to the Administrative Rules Review Committee, the body of legislators that reviews all administrative agency rulemakings.

As a Civil Rights Specialist, I served as an investigator and mediator. I was responsible for conducting full investigations, including interviewing parties and writing decisions for an administrative law judge's approval. I also mediated complaints, helping parties amicably resolve disputes before they reach the investigative stage of the complaint process.

As a clerk at ICRC, I screened complaints to determine whether they warranted further investigation. I also conducted several investigations and drafted a brief for the agency's Assistant Attorney General that successfully defended an agency action in Iowa District Court.

I spent most of my time at the Capitol, working closely with Justin Hupfer and John Cacciatore. I drafted bills for clients, tracked legislation, attended and reported on meetings, and performed various other tasks to support and promote our clients' interests.

I researched legal issues for pending legislation in the Iowa Senate. I helped draft language for significant legislation, such as a corporate campaign finance reform bill and a ban on texting while driving. I also attended committee and subcommittee meetings, and communicated with lobbyists and other senators regarding pending legislation.
