About Teagan Sweet
Teagan is a fourth year graduate student in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, who is excited and enthusiastic to be working in the Burns lab. Teagan studies synthesis of new actinide materials, working mostly on developing novel uranium and neptunium structures with ligands such as borate, sulfate, phosphate, arsenate, and oxalate. Most recently, Teagan has just completed her internship as a UNLP Fellow at Oak Ridge National Laboratory under Dr. Tyler Spano in the Nuclear Nonproliferation Division. Teagan grew up in Massachusetts and graduated in May of 2020 from St. John’s University in New York City with her ACS certified degree in Chemistry, with minors in Photography and International studies. There she did computational research under Dr. Frank Vazquez focusing on the protein dynamin and understanding how allosteric changes are propagated through the dynamin oligomeric helix, in order to determine its catalytic significance in membrane scission. Additionally, Teagan worked at Trinity College Dublin under Dr. Peter Dunne developing new green materials leading to future advances in diverse fields including energy storage, solar cells, and drug delivery by focusing on the growth of hollow and plant-like microstructures from colloidal sulfur seeds. Teagan is passionate about energy science and loves her current work at Notre Dame.

Teagan Sweet work experience
A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.
Graduate Student- Dr. Peter C. Burns Lab
Under Dr. Peter Burns, I work towards developing new actinide materials. Our work is centralized on understanding the basic science of the actinides, the fuel of nuclear energy. I work in particular with borosulfate chemistry, oxalate chemistry, and general synthesis techniques.
Jeannette K. Watson Fellow
As a Jeannette K. Watson Fellow, I was awarded a highly selective three-year fellowship that develops the potential of promising students to become effective and humane leaders. Selection criteria include high standards, leadership, ambition, ability to work in teams, interest in exploring diverse cultures, and integrity.
Student Researcher- Dr. Frank X. Vázquez Lab
I conduct theoretical research aimed at understanding how orientation and folding of proteins and monomers lead to large-scale changes in the cell, and how these changes influence molecular interactions. These structures are caused by mutations associated with Parkinson’s and Huntington’s diseases.
Research Assistant- Dr. Peter Dunne Lab
I conducted an inorganic research project, focusing on the growth of hollow and plant-like microstructures from colloidal sulfur seeds. I obtained and studied biomorphic structures and was able to expand the synthetic protocols in order to allow the formation of a wider variety of metal sulfide microstructures. This research may lead to significant developments in applied areas of catalysis, sensing, and microfluidics.
Communications Intern
At American Documentary, I worked with POV- television's longest-running showcase for independent non-fiction films. I created, edited, and released press content through a variety of platforms as well as contacted and built relationships with filmmakers and producers.
