Director, Enps Design & Integration Strategy

New York, Ny, Us

In 2010 I was tasked with re-inventing the ENPS product as a multi-platform, story-centric production system. The output of this effort, collaboratively produced by a very talented team of developers and management colleagues, was a set of prioritized design specs intended to carry the product forward for a number of years. As Director of ENPS Design I led the conceptual shift of the ENPS product from a "broadcast centric" production tool (ENPS v1-v6) to a "multi-channel/story-centric" production tool (ENPS v7+) that more broadly embraces online workflows and distribution. As Director of Integration Strategy I continued in my responsibilities for the design and implementation of integration interfaces in ENPS, as well as the development of the ENPS Integration Ecosystem which included technical and marketing relationships with dozens of vendor partners.

Mar 2010 - Nov 2012

Director Of Broadcast Distribution Systems And Strategy

New York, Ny, Us

This promotion resulted in broader responsibilities and leadership within the AP which included design and development of a file based digital distribution system for the APTN global video news service. In this capacity I was assigned a reporting relationship to the AP SVP of Broadcast. My responsibilities for ENPS product and integration design, management of the ENPS Integration Support Team, and responsibility for the ENPS vendor ecosystem continued.

Mar 2003 - Mar 2010

Enps Technology Development Manager

New York, Ny, Us

Responsible for the definition and implementation of the initial integration strategy for AP's ENPS product for broadcast journalists. AP's early involvement in the industry standard MOS Protocol and my leadership of that group followed. This quickly led to the growth of the ENPS Integration Ecosystem in which more than 100 participating companies. The use of the MOS Protocol allowed third parties to integrate their products with newsroom systems such as ENPS in a standardize manner never before possible. This allowed companies such as Sony to include media preview and edit controls within ENPS via standardized plug-ins. MOS also allowed ENPS to synchronize a dynamic list of stories and media with playout devices, such as provided by Sony, in near real-time.

Ussb

This was an additional assignment to develop of the initial standard operating procedures and conduct staff training required to support one of the first two Direct Broadcast Satellite uplinks/head-ends to serve the United States. DirecTV shared the same satellite but transmitted their uplink from another location. USSB was later acquired by DirecTV.Conus and USSB were both enterprises of Hubbard Broadcasting and shared engineering resources.

Nov 1994 - Nov 1996

Satellite Operations Manager

Conus Communications

This was a promotion which acknowledged the growth of my responsibilities beyond operation of the Conus Master Control Service to include a separate Master Control operations for the All News Channel, a formal training program for satellite operators, representation of Conus in industry standards groups and involvement in other projects, including USSB.

Mar 1992 - Sep 1996

Satellite Operations Supervisor

Conus Communications

Responsible for 24x7 operation of the Conus Master Control Service (CMCS) which was tasked with providing interference free operation of three full-time satellite transponders with as many as 16 simultaneous analog field transmissions. Each field uplink was also supported by two-way satellite based communication for both reporters and transmission operators. The uplinks for these transmission paths could change uplink locations as often as every five minutes. CMCS Operators functioned much like Air Traffic Controllers, communicating through the satellite to each truck in a manner similar to Air Traffic Control. Each transmission "Path" was analogous to a runway and each satellite truck comparable to an aircraft. At the peak of its operation, Conus could handle more than half of all satellite news field transmissions in the US and was considered the pre-eminent Ku satellite service provider for many years. Many iconic video images were first transmitted via Conus, including video from the Sioux City plane crash, the San Francisco earthquake of 1989 as well as numerous hurricanes, including Hugo. One of the Conus satellite trucks is on permanent display in the Newseum in Washington, DC.Conus was the technical brain-child of Ray Conover, widely credited as the inventor of the Satellite News Truck. I was very fortunate to be mentored by Ray during this time. His pragmatic approach to engineering provided a strong and lasting influence on my own technical philosophies.
