My role within my company has now changed 4 times. I started as a network technician, then Network Administrator, then IT Manager, and now as of Nov 2019 I am working as a Sr. Systems Engineer.I held the position of IT Manager for 10 years and loved it. During that time I oversaw and developed the technology infrastructure of the company. I had so many hats to wear, and I liked juggling them. End user support, network engineering, system design and administration, disaster recovery, Exchange management, security, software, IIS and SQL. The list could go on and on. Everything was documented, everything was reliable, If we needed a tool we had it, our team had a good track record and we worked hard to keep it. Then in 2018 we were bought out by HSI. After we were purchased there was an 18 month transition period where I kept my role but I was helping to transition much of my role to the parent company’s IT team. I assisted in the o365 migration and many other technology consolidation efforts, but once it was all done I was transitioned to the DevOps team. Now as a Sr. Systems Engineer I am focused on the customer facing infrastructure of the organization. For what was Vivid Learning systems, and for HSI’s systems. I primarily support the servers and infrastructure, but I also support developers directly with their needs. I document and take notes on everything I do due to the massive variety of specialized tasks I am now performing. Security, SQL management, automation scripting, disaster recovery, and auditing are all major regularly recurring focuses of my efforts. I’m on a two man team and I couldn’t ask for a better boss. Transitioning to this new role has worked well thanks to him. I still get to go back and help with internal IT from time to time, especially during the Covoid19 pandemic. Now more than ever I have all my new hats, and even some of my old IT manager hats on to help the company cope with the fallout.
