Over 40 years experience as a fisheries scientist working mainly on the conservation of migratory salmonid, eel and freshwater fish stocks and the sustainable management of the recreational and commercial fisheries that are dependent upon them. Currently the Senior Fisheries Adviser on Salmonid and Freshwater Fisheries at Cefas, providing expert advice to Defra, the EU and other customers on the factors affecting fish stocks, approaches for their management and related legislative controls. Coordinated and managed research programmes and provided consultancy advice both nationally and internationally. Led projects for the UK and foreign Governments, government agencies, conservation bodies, stakeholders and private industry. Customers include Defra, the Environment Agency, the European Union, the Department of Communication, Marine and Natural Resources (Ireland), and the Centre for Independent Experts (USA). Principal areas of research have been related to the behaviour of migratory fish and the modelling of fish populations and fisheries to support management decision-making. Involved in – and chaired - a wide range of national and international scientific and advisory groups, particularly under the auspices of ICES and NASCO. Currently chair of the NASCO West Greenland Commission. Works closely with policy makers in the UK government, EU and international management organisations and has extensive experience of presenting complex scientific arguments to non-specialist audiences.
