 Chairman of GAMA (Global Acetate Manufacturers Association) Regulatory Affairs Committee. Championing an active ingredient through the requirements of the Biocidal Products Directive including environmental fate studies.  Part of an industry group tracking and lobbying on the implementation of the new EU Chemicals Policy (REACH). Representing industry in discussions with European regulators regarding compounds going through the Existing Substances Directive and proposed changes to Occupational Exposure Limits.  Championing the implementation of Product Stewardship in the company. Assisting with the introduction of a Sustainable Development / Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme by performing gap analyses and planning a way forward. Deliver annual lectures at Warwick and York universities on various topics including Ecotoxicology, Sustainability and Life Cycle Assessment.  Sitting on various CIA (Chemical Industries Association) committees including the Supply Chain Leadership Group, a joint committee with the British Retailers Association (M&S, The Body Shop, Boots etc). A sub-contracted consultant to WSP Environmental leading on setting up their REACH Consultancy service.

Providing Courtaulds businesses assistance in toxicology by: Tracking developments in legislation and the literature with respect to key raw materials and products.  Assessing the toxicity profiles of raw materials. Summarising toxicity study reports. Searching and summarising information from toxicity data sources. Performing occupational and environmental risk assessments. Recommending exposure control and environmental containment. Compiling safety data sheets and advising on classification and labelling.Advising the Courtaulds businesses on regulatory compliance in such areas as: Existing Substances Regulations and risk assessments. Integrated Pollution & Prevention Control (IPPC) applications. CHIP & COSHH Regulations & Safety Data Sheet Compilation. Eco-labelling criteria. Direct toxicity consentsKeeping the Courtaulds businesses briefed by: Publishing a regular toxicity and environmental legislation reviews. Co-ordinating the Endocrine Modulation network Presenting at internal HSE conferences.Initiating Environmental improvements by: Assisting in the implementation of Environmental Management Systems such as ISO14001 Performing audits and environmental impact studies and recommending improvement schemes.Representing Courtaulds on the following committees: European Paint Makers (CEPE) Paint Advisory Group. Chemical Industries Association (CIA) Products Advisory Group. European Man-made fibres Association (CIRFS) Health and Environmental Issues Committee. The Industrial Council for Packaging and the Environment (INCPEN) Technical Committee.Training and Educational Devising and delivering in-house training in environmental, health and regulatory affairs. Delivering lectures at universities and conferences

Acrylic Fibre Polymer Research Group.Specialising in solution and free radical polymerisation methods.Responsible for managing a group of chemists and chemical engineers scaling-up successful laboratory experiments to pilot plant and plant scale.At that time Courtaulds was a leading UK chemical company employing some 70,000 people and manufacturing fibres, packaging, coatings and chemicals. It was a pleasure working in such a vibrant research environment.
