About Ted Sparrey

Brought up on a Birmingham council estate, I had a great work ethic instilled in me by my hard-working self-employed parents who ran two fishing tackle shops – one in the Birmingham half and one in the Aston Villa half of town. I spent time learning to sell in my dad’s shop on Villa Road. I’d work there as a kid in the morning and then I’d go to Villa Park to watch football before heading home. Yes – I’m a Villa fan! I remember how dad would go the extra mile to make sure his customers (who seemed like mates) would return through ensuring complete satisfaction with their purchases and the ‘added-value’ of dad’s advice (he had also been a very successful match-fisherman and really knew his stuff)!I left school with 13 ‘O-levels’ and headed off to College to study A-levels in Maths, Chemistry and Computer Studies with thoughts of University. Funny how things work out – my friends were all working (or on benefits) and had money. I didn’t, so I dropped out of College and resolved to get a job - and without ‘career’ direction I fell into Banking and the NatWest Group in B’ham at the height of the 80’s Banking boom. A year later, they asked me to transfer to London where I joined their Management Development Program.One of my NatWest Corporate customer contacts had taken on a role as Head of Sales for a Software Company and asked me to join his sales team. My first professional sales role outside the Bank and my dad’s shop and one I loved and thrived in. What I loved about my sales role was that I could help people to overcome problems. I could add-value through personal insight and I could share in their success. Not monetarily - but through personal pride. I found my old customers staying in touch and buying from me again as I, or they, moved on. They trusted me first time around and I didn’t let them down. And as I turned to sales leadership, I have tried to instill in my colleagues the obsession with customer first. It’s not about ‘selling’ - it’s about problem solving and helping people to make good investment decisions on behalf of their companies. I/we have the answers to problems some people know they have and that others don’t yet know about. We help them to identify the issues they have and to help them to solve them with great technology. Technology and a company I truly believe in and I wouldn’t be representing if I didn’t.I now live in a village in Surrey with my family where our first child has started University – the first of us Sparrey’s to do so. That fills me with immense pride. If only mum and dad were here to see it!
