A graduate of the University of Central Florida Business School, Terence J. McCarthy got his start in real estate in 1978, buying and renovating hotels, and later, homes. In his first decade in business, he refurbished and sold more than 100 single-family structures in Orlando, Tampa, Sebring, Clearwater, and St. Petersburg, FL. Beginning in the 1990s, Terence J. McCarthy shifted his focus to multi-family projects and hotels. He acquired two apartment complexes and six hotels in St. Petersburg, FL, and later purchased two high-rises in Clearwater. He turned one of the buildings, a 15-story structure, into a luxury retirement community, The Oaks of Clearwater. In the years that followed, Terence J. McCarthy and his company, TJM Properties, acquired new properties. It expanded into independent- and assisted-living facilities, and purchased eight communities in recent years. The company now operates 19 facilities in Florida, Virginia, and North Carolina. Some of TJM’s holdings include Spring Haven Retirement Community, a 17-acre, waterfront village in Winter Haven; Lake Morton Plaza, a high-rise in Lakeland; and Sunset Lake Village, a development that is home to nine separate neighborhoods. Mr. McCarthy’s team continues to seek additional investment opportunities in the eastern part of the United States. In 2011, Terence J. McCarthy established a separate corporation to buy hotels throughout Florida. That arm now operates a Baymont Inn & Suites in Fort Myers, a Quality Inn & Suites in Clearwater, and a Howard Johnson in Lakeland. Away from his business interests, Terence J. McCarthy gives back to his community. Over the years, he has contributed to hundreds of philanthropic organizations. Likewise, he serves on the Board of Directors of the St. Petersburg Junior Magic, a youth basketball league; the Police Athletic League; and Bon Secours Health Systems.
