About Terrence Jones

Follow your passion, and success will follow you. – Arthur BuddholdThe above quote summarizes what life has taught me. To succeed, one must have passion behind their work; to enjoy your work is not enough. The success in my career has been found alongside my passions and I intend to practice this understanding as an entrepreneur.I moved to Paso Robles, CA a few years ago having left my software engineering job to develop a business in the wine world. I have been a longtime wine enthusiast and love the Rhone styled wines of Paso Robles in particular. I am currently developing a public radio show which brings the magic of the Central Coast wine world into listeners lives. Sharing my love of wine is my focus and I believe that my passions are well expressed when talking to and educating the wine loving public.I previously lived for 5 years in Penang, Malaysia where I led an R&D team of software engineers. Our team designed a 4G mobile phone test and measurement software platform. This time taught me well the importance of clear concise communication, strong leadership and the proper setting of responsibilities and expectations. With my previous employer’s size and worldwide presence, I was afforded the opportunity to travel and interact with colleagues and customers from around the globe. I’ve lived for years in Asia (Malaysia and Korea), months in Europe and have made countless trips supporting our customers around the U.S.These opportunities have given me a global perspective and valuable cultural immersion. I understand that the world is ever shrinking and that global business success requires an open mind.I am now in a position to work for myself, driven by passion and with a literal world of opportunity available.Specialties: Wine, Rhone Wine, Paso Robles, Software Engineering, Software Architecture, .NET, C#, LINQ, WPF, MVVM, Test and Measurement, 4G, GSM, WCDMA, LTE, Agilent GS8800, Asia, Korea, Seoul, Malaysia, Penang, California Wine

R&D Software Engineer, Expert. Software Lead For Wireless Test Platforms In Penang, Malaysia

✔ POSITION HIGHLIGHTS✦ Successfully helped to grow the Penang team into fully self-sufficient domain-experts in software system platforms✦ Investigation, Design and Development of a next-generation platform using .NET 3.5 with C#, WPF, WFC, LINQ, and MVVM✦ Led and completion of custom software solution for top tier customer which involved a multi-division team of engineers from around the world✦ Developed great friendships and cultural experience fully taking advantage of my time in MalaysiaIn August of 2006, I was asked to take the lead of software development for Agilent Technologies’ Wireless Systems Platform R&D team in Penang, Malaysia. I relocated to Penang and worked there for three years in this capacity. The R&D team in Penang is responsible for the design and development of R&D Design Verification (DV) and Conformance wireless test systems, specifically the Agilent GS-8800 family. As the US GS-8800 software expert with a history with the product from its inception, I was tasked with building expertise in Penang. My primary assignment was to begin the investigation, design, and development of a next-generation wireless systems software platform. The new platform was to use fully modern software technologies and practices incorporating Agilent’s COMeTS test platform.I was also responsible for involvement in short-term support escalations. This meant working directly with customers to represent the R&D team and to manage expectations. It was necessary to coordinate and balance customer priorities with R&D effort. As the software lead, I was the point man for investigation and custom development for strategic customers. This role involved working with customer requirements to develop Statements of Work, Proposals, prototype software design, high-level architecture, as well as proof-of-concept and fully developed software solutions. High-level discussions with the customer and frequent travel were also requirements of this role.

Sep 2006 - Oct 2009

Sales And Support Application Engineer. Platform Customization And Support Of R&D Systems.

✔ POSITION HIGHLIGHTS✦ Grew to become Americas' region domain expert on the GS-8800 family of R&D / Design Verification (DV) and Conformance wireless test systems✦ Frequent travel throughout the United States in support of pre-sales activities, post-sales support, and training on several Wireless System solutions✦ Six-week business trip to Paris and Germany to co-develop a proof of concept demo solution for wireless handset manufacturing built around the Agilent 8960 one-box tester family✦ Further developed sales skills and customer-facing expertiseThe role of Application Engineer at Agilent, involves liaising between the end customer / field sales and the R&D groups. My responsibilities were to provide end-customer technical support, customization of R&D wireless systems, and involvement in pre-sales activities and demos. My primary areas of focus during this time were the Agilent GS-8800 family of R&D / Design Verification (DV) and Conformance wireless test systems, WLAN wireless R&D systems, and occasionally fully custom systems. This role required frequent on-site visits to customers’ R&D centers, where I would work intimately with the end users of our systems. I would organize and host regular telephone meetings with field teams and customers to ensure that our customers were receiving world-class support.Often software customization was necessary for our standard systems. To accommodate these customizations, I was responsible to work with the customer to understand requirements, develop proposals and implement the software customizations. Customization work was often a joint effort between our Application Engineering teams, the R&D teams, and/or other Application Engineers. This demanded working closely with a geographically and culturally diverse team.

Nov 2004 - Aug 2006

Pre And Post Sales Application Engineer. Custom Wireless Systems Solutions.

✔ POSITION HIGHLIGHTS✦ Early exposure and usage of .NET / C#✦ Practical usage of strong software lifecycle processes✦ Further international exposure with extended travel to Sweden, Germany, and especially KoreaDuring this period at Agilent, I focused on fully custom and tailored wireless systems for both manufacturing and R&D. Our systems were capable of calibrating a handset or base station (transmitter / receiver), full final RF test, and R&D design verification.I developed algorithms and code to test the customers’ devices, typically working closely with the customer R&D team. The software was typically developed using C++/MFC/COM and later .NET/C# controlling instruments such as one-box RF testers, spectrum analyzers, and signal generators.I traveled to Asia, where I worked in Seoul, Korea, for six months on an extended business trip. I joined Agilent’s Korean team on a manufacturing calibration and test solution for a Tier 1 customer. I had frequent customer contact through onsite visits and acted as a liaison between the Korean and US teams to ensure clear communication.Returning to the US, I jointly began developing a custom R&D Design Verification, GSM/WCDMA test system. This system provided standard 2G and 3G tests and flexibility for custom design verification. The software was written entirely in .NET/C#, providing me exposure to what was, at the time, a new language. This system served as the prototype for the GS-8800 family test systems. I traveled frequently and for long periods to customer facilities in Sweden and Germany, which allowed me to deepen my international experience as only long stays in a foreign country can.I next joined a team tasked with creating a scalable test system architecture. This software platform, named COMeTS, would be used throughout Agilent by teams that developed standard and custom test systems. As a fully software-based project, the COMeTS team followed rigorous software lifecycle methodologies.

Oct 2001 - Oct 2004

Software Design Engineer. Rf Fixturing R&D.

✔ POSITION HIGHLIGHTS✦ Participation in a full long-term R&D project lifecycle✦ Development of custom language and compiler for RF fixture macro control✦ Travel to Scotland for three-week onsite customer visitIn November, 2009, Agilent Technologies was formed having spun off from Hewlett-Packard. Agilent would continue HP’s legacy of Test and Measurement.Following my previous custom test fixturing project, I was loaned to an R&D team that would build a fully standard RF test fixture. This fixture would be very module to accommodate a wide variety of customer requirements. As a member of this project, lasting ~2 years, I was responsible for control software written in C++/MFC/COM and worked intimately with the firmware design engineer. I developed a custom macro language that, through custom scripts, allowed the customer to customize the control of the fixture mechanics and RF/acoustic switching. This effort required the development of a byte code syntax and a custom compiler (high-level to byte code). As I participated in this project from start to finish, I developed a greater understanding and appreciation of proper R&D product lifecycle management. Agilent uses its own process called PLC, which was followed rigorously in this project. A proper understanding of project and lifecycle management continues to serve me well as I work on new projects large and small.Several patents were applied for through this project. I was jointly granted US patent #6751570: “RF fixture electronics for testing RF devices”.

Nov 1999 - Aug 2001

Software Design Engineer. Custom Systems And Fixturing.

✔ POSITION HIGHLIGHTS✦ Joined Hewlett-Packard as Software engineer✦ Exposure to high-volume manufacturing and mechanical fixturing✦ Travel to Finland and various customer sites in the USI joined Hewlett-Packard in May of 1997 through their Student Employment and Educational Development (SEED) internship program as a software engineer. I entered into the custom systems and integration test team which developed custom test solutions for a wide variety of industries. I worked full time during the summers and half-time during the school year. Upon graduation from Colorado State University in 1998 I joined HP as a full time software engineer.I worked on several custom system solutions such as data acquisition, RF and lightwave test. Our software was typically written in C++/MFC and occasionally HP/Agilent VEE. The variety of custom solutions provided me experience working with and distilling customer requirements into proposals and formal designs. Intimate work with the customers was key and occasional travel necessary.A key project during this time was a custom high-volume manufacturing RF handset (cell phone) test fixture. The test fixture is a robotic device that interacts with the handset during manufacturer to perform RF, acoustic, display / vision and physical key pressing test. For this project I was responsible for PC control software and drivers to allow remote control. Due to the mechanical nature of the project, the team was made up of a diverse set of engineers including software, mechanical and electrical.
