Limited duty officers (Submarine Electronics) are officer technical managers in the field of non-nuclear electronics. These officers plan, coordinate, and supervise the installation, operation, and maintenance of electronics systems installed in units of the submarine force; assist in the operational evaluation of new installations as well as modifications to existing systems; provide operational and technical input to the research and development community for consideration in the design and testing of electronics systems and components; assist in the preparation and distribution of operator and maintenance training courses; and provide operation and maintenance guidance for electronics systems at all levels of command. They also may serve as division officers, department heads or electronics material officers in various operational and staff billets.

Performs duties in direct support of a designated project manager. Performs duties in the engineering, logistics, procurement, test and evaluation, or financial management phases of the project.

Administers military and/or civilian personnel training program for naval activity. Adjusts instruction program to conform to training syllabus and manuals. Develops training curriculum. Confers with officers in charge of schools and with instructors to determine causes of failures. Directs training aids officer to supply equipment to improve instruction. Directs voluntary education program.

Operates, troubleshoots, repairs, and performs maintenance on submarine sonar oceanographic and auxiliary sonar equipment; coordinates use of submarine sonar and underwater weapons control system; knows oceanographic aspects such as wave propagation in a fluid medium, with variables of temperature and pressure. Performs operational tests and makes external adjustments on equipment; uses schematic and wiring/circuitry diagrams; troubleshoots and repairs; analyzes, tracks, records and reports data; operates a bathythermograph to obtain water temperature versus depth; prepares and interprets sonar messages; completes maintenance data forms. Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on sonar equipment; tests and repairs or replaces electrical/electronic components and parts; localizes equipment malfunctions to systems, subsystems, circuits, or parts; installs minor modifications to electronic sonar equipment; operates analog/digital sonar computer; inventories tools, portable test equipment, and installed equipment; completes maintenance reports; trains and supervises subordinates.
