A marginal athlete, I swam at UBC while earning a degree in Physical Education with possibly the lowest GPA in school history. Found limited success as a distance swimmer in the early years of triathlon and open water swimming in BC. Pursued a career as a swim coach until I grew disillusioned with a sport system that measured success by its outliers.I left coaching to enter public recreation in 1982. As Coordinator of Community Services for the NVRC '90-'07 involved in community development through sport and outdoor recreation, and promoting policies of support for low income and marginalized residents.Seconded in the lead-up to the 2010 Winter Games, I spent over three years assisting sport organizations, municipal recreation departments and First Nations communities in developing integrated programs and systems. I returned to NVRC as Coordinator where I led the centralized program design team and oversaw operation of the expanded Tennis Centre before retiring in 2015.Thirty-nine years ago, Susan knew I was an aspiring swim coach but married me anyway, enriching my life by producing four children (Leah, Cydney, Cameron and Rylee). Afraid of becoming a “coach dad”, I did coach Little League for six seasons, retiring before reaching my level of incompetence. In 2009, I completed a Master’s degree in Urban Studies (SFU), pursuing interest in livable cities, active transportation, urban agriculture and affordable housing. I volunteer with the Safety Council, Fruit Tree Project, KidSport, and am active in our church community.I facilitate workshops in HIGH FIVE, NCCP, and Club Excellence, and encourage positive engagement through sport and active living to parents groups, coaches, and students. This contented life of semi-retirement is enriched by my grandchildren, Sam, Knox, Lucy and Cate, and my granddogs Zuzu and Charlie.Specialties: Community development, sport, physical literacy/activity strategies, group facilitation, coaching, public speaking.
