Being a technical writer is a lot like being a translator. I work closely with engineers, product managers, trainers, and other stakeholders to understand complex systems and language, synthesize that understanding, and communicate it to an end user in a way that empowers them to take action. I'm great at this because of my consistent and thorough research, project management, meticulous eye for detail, and ability to get subject matter experts to speak at length about technical details.As a Marine, I spent a great deal of time poring over technical manuals (affectionately referred to as “Knowledge"), seeking obscure specifications for demanding superiors. Most Marines abhor this process but I secretly loved it. There's something pure about technical manuals—no editorializing, no click-bait, just raw knowledge distilled to its purest, most useful form. Following an honorable discharge from the service, I sought to parlay my affinity for technical documentation into a career. This led me to ITW where I create and maintain hundreds of technical documents used by thousands of technicians and customers worldwide including service manuals, part catalogs, update bulletins, user guides, forms, surveys, SOPs, learning modules, and more.Fast-forward five years and I've moved into the exciting and innovative biotechnology industry at Illumina, where I work with a small team of writers responsible for the the rollout and maintenance of the service documentation suite which supports our company's flagship DNA sequencer, the NovaSeq X. I believe that a diverse set of life and work experiences lends a unique perspective to the work that I do. I love meeting new people and hearing new perspectives.
