About Daniel Smith
My goal is to use the experiences I have gathered across a broad range of fields within science and engineering to inform my role as a mentor and teacher. I started my career as an assistant in a private engineering firm that specialized in diffusion bonding, consultation, and quality control. From there, I transitioned to a more biology-focused career that has allowed me to gain experience in a variety of fundamental techniques in molecular biology, tissue culture, as well as vertebrate and invertebrate in vivo model systems. I have also planned and taught several college courses, providing experience in curriculum development and science communication at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.My post-Doctoral work in the Bernstein lab has allowed me to tap this diversity of experience and refine my interpersonal skills through my role as a mentor for nine undergraduate research assistants. Many of these students have successfully transitioned into science careers that include research assistants for local biotechnology companies, science education and outreach. Others have continued to pursue higher education through medical and graduate school programs. For over a year now, I have run a group of four undergraduate students, allowing me to gain experience in leadership, team management, and communication. Looking to the future, I plan on continuing to use this range of abilities to further diversify my experiences through new career opportunities.
