Small company specializing in custom solutions for small companies. Over the years I've written many desktop and web-based database applications for customers on a contract basis. I also authored one of the first Beeper Business applications (Beeptrack) which was a full service solution for small beeper businesses back before cellphones became prevalent. Other projects included predictive dialing software, networked client/server customer service applications, Website redesigns, CMS implementations, custom middleware, and publishing solutions. Owner/programmer for Squirrelcart (www.squirrelcart.com), which is a shopping cart package written in PHP for people who wish to sell software on their websites.

Caputo Media is a very small media company comprising of only 3 people. My role as CTO can be better described as a man of all technical hats. This means I was Programmer/Server Admin/Helpdesk/Designer all at the same time. I solely managed our 16 colocated servers, running a variety of network services including Web Servers (set up in a fault-tolerant cluster), NFS, Database Servers, Development Servers, Image servers and more. I also was responsible for all network security, firewall updates, intrusion detection and defense, outages and more. From a programming perspective I was responsible for creating, maintaining, and updating the code for our 9 websites including additional features such as forums, ad server integration, automated nightly newsletters, monitoring and security scripts, backups and all of the associated scripts and scheduled cron jobs to keep such a large network updated and running at top performance at all times. Implemented a CI/CD flow using first Hudson, then Jenkins to proliferate code across the datacenter environments.Technologies used: PHP, HTML, CSS, AJAX, Javascript, Jquery, Linux, MySQL, NFS, Apache, AWS, Hudson/Jenkins, Ansible, Shell Scripting and I'm sure much more.Platforms: Cent OS, Joomla (highly customized), Drupal, vBulletin, OpenX and many smaller pieces and parts used to build the whole system.Design: While not a Graphic Designer by trade, I was tasked at times with page redesigns, work in Photoshop to create new graphics and to create video tutorials using tools such as Camtasia Studio.Support: 24/7 on-call support for outages, hack attempts, race conditions and overall maintenance.There are tons of smaller details I handled on a day to day basis, which could keep filling this page for quite some time. Basically, I was the only technical asset for an online media company doing more than 40 million monthly impressions network wide.

When I first started with Developer Shed, we had a network of 4 developer websites all running different software configurations on a non-redundant architecture. After researching several CMS options, I decided on the Mambo CMS (pre-joomla) and migrated all of our existing sites onto a single codebase. I then expanded our network to eventually include more than 10 developer-based websites, and moved to a fault-tolerant network using clustered web servers and redundant MySQL database servers (using DRBD AND Heartbeat). We were later purchased by Insight Venture Capitalists (mainly for the web topology I had put together to run our network) and merged with Ziff Davis Enterprise, of which I became their CTO.During my tenure as CTO of ZDE, I oversaw the physical and technical separation of ZDE from Ziff Davis Gaming. All technical aspects of our NYC operations were hosted by ZD Gaming, and when we separated it required a full migration plan with implementation of a whole new network infrastructure including everything from phone lines, hardware, network connections, servers (and racks), email and more for over 400 NYC employees all going live over 1 weekend.In addition, personally converted each and every high-end news site from Vignette to our custom Mambo CMS (with new expanded functionality) and a similar infrastructure to our Developer Shed setup, increasing our server footprint from 14 to 28 servers and lowering our total cost of ownership by more than 90%. (Vignette had a monthly licensing fee PER website of more than $20k).

Began my employ here as a COBOL application programmer. My quality of work, ability to see the big picture and skill at picking up and learning new technologies and languages helped me to grow fairly quickly. Early on in my employ I gained "ownership" of Msgupdt and Tapemacs, which were both integral parts of the enterprise fulfillment software and both prone to and full of bugs and issues. Within a few months, all bugs and issues in the programming queue were fixed. I did this by not only reading the complaint, but tracking down the different department members who understood the proper business logic, so I understood why a certain change needed to be made so I could make the best change necessary. After removing all bugs, I then did complete rewrites bringing application size down by more than 40% and increasing processing speed by over 300%.As the internet began to grow, it only made sense that our catalog order fulfillment software made a perfect back-end for a live web storefront. I was tapped to be the technical designer/programmer to make this happen. For the first 3 years on the project, I was the only tech designer and programmer. I created a custom middle-ware software that communicated between the HP3000 back-end and the IIS front-end using TCP and CGIs written in C. This later expanded to COM Objects and API's callable from PHP and other similar languages. The Weborder product (later Ecometry Online) was a runner up for best of Comdex 3 years running. Weborder alone was responsible for 5% of eCommerce on the planet during Internet 1.0, and also the reason that a old-school mainframe software provider went public as an internet company, earning more than $40 million at IPO.Later went on to run R&D, designing and integrating new technologies into our product offerings.

KCI's bread and butter was a traffic management software called The Traffic Manager. The product was written in COBOL, and our "hook" was that we would convert it to run on any host environment. In my time there, I integrated TTM into platforms such as VMS/RDB, Unix/DB2, Unix/Oracle, IBM CICS, DOS/Btrieve, and others. Customers included Toys R Us, Dayton Hudson/Marshall Fields (Now Target Corporation), Sony, Home Depot, TVA, Rical Milgo and more.
