About Fabio Benedetti

I am currently IBM Distinguished Engineer in IBM Public Cloud unit and before in IBM Cloud and Smarter infrastructure units. My role is an executive-level appointment for employees who have followed a technical career path. It requires technical skills and accomplishments, knowledge of the software business and strategy, successful client engagements, and leadership/management capabilities.I have more then 25 years of experience in the industry occupying various roles in development, design and architecture of products across all major platforms and technologies, spanning from cloud, linux/windows and to mainframe. My main expertise is in software architecture and development leading large development teams implementing and delivering complex software projects and products designed for scale, performance and availability.I am currently leading architecture and implementation of cloud based software services delivered on hyperscale WW cloud using combination of leading edge technologies like: microservice architecture, modern front end development in JavaScript, node.js, Java/J2EE, no-SQL databases (cloudant, mongodb), etc. and cloud platforms and technologies like: Kubernetes, Docker, Chef, etc. I am passionate about agile software development methodologies and have applied them successfully to my teams in different large scale projects. In addition to software development roles I also covered the client facing role of Cloud Computing architect in the IBM Software services organization working with several major clients to the design and implementation of large scale service provider and private cloud computing infrastructures. I have presented to conferences like Interconnect/Pulse and other regional marketing and user group events.  For my technical accomplishment I have been elected Member of the IBM Academy of Technology since 2011.Moreover I am IBM Master Inventor since 20010 with more then 25 filed patents.

It allows to fully automate the provisioning and life cycle of complex application patterns composed of compute resource (virtual servers, storage, network), middleware components (application servers, datatabases, etc.) and integrating with IT service management process (including e.g. change management, asset management, monitoring, backup/restore, security, etc.).I led the ground up design of the product architecture assembling best-of-breed technologies from different IBM brands (WebSphere, and Technology Group)and open source communities. Some key aspects of the solution were:- Exploitation of the OpenStack IaaS technology for managing the virtual servers, storage, network provisioning (OpenStack nova, cinder, neutron services) and complex pattern deployment (OpenStack heat patterns)- Integration of IBM Pure Application pattern engine for coordinating the provisioning of complex patterns of middleware/application components - Integration of IBM Business Process Manager workflow engine to fully automate the IT processes (runbooks) for managing the cloud services- Implementation of a modular architecture that enabled the integration with external public cloud technologies like Amazon EC2 and IBM Softlayer in very similar to provide a leading-edge Hybrid cloud management solutionIn recognition of his innovative work and ability to drive collaboration across different IBM units I was appointed of IBM Cross-Team Outstanding Technical Achievement Integrated Offering Award in 2013.
