In college, after earning two Bachelor of Arts degrees—one in Writing & Linguistics and the other in Modern Languages with an emphasis in Spanish—I spent much of my time learning computer systems, classroom protocols, STEM learning systems, and more. I was preparing myself to be a teacher or professor, and right after graduating, I entered the education field. I was inexperienced but eager and ready to give it my all. However, I was not prepared for the wage challenges and gaps that professionals in that field face and quickly learned that I would need a second job to support my teaching career.Cue the culinary industry. What started as supplemental income turned into an unexpected passion, supported by a deep ancestral connection. The culinary industry is competitive and demanding, yet it leaves space for creativity, personal resilience, and a passion for exceeding expectations, not only in customers but in yourself as a chef. This is what kept me in the field for over a decade.Although I've been in the kitchen, exceeding both my and the industry's expectations, I never lost sight of the ever-growing tech industry and made it a point to keep my technological skills polished. Now that I am older, I realize that I can no longer spend over thirteen hours in the kitchen. I need to rely on my computer systems skills to build a more balanced work life while still quenching my desire to challenge myself and learn new things. The skills I developed as a Chef—such as attention to detail, time management, and teamwork—are directly transferable to a career in remote telecommunications.
