About Theodore Kim

I am a journalist and communications professional with more than 20 years of experience in management, strategy, editing, reporting and writing and digital thinking. In my current job, I oversee early-career programs and strategy for The New York Times. My portfolio includes managing some of journalism's signature career-development endeavors. Those efforts, which collectively total some $4.5 million annually, include The New York Times Fellowship and Times Corps, both of which I helped conceive of and build from scratch, the Times Editing Residency and various other career programs. I run a team of five people and liaise constantly with top leaders across the newsroom, as well as in strategy, finance and Human Resources.Graduating Times Fellows have gone on to positions across the industry, including The Washington Post, Bloomberg, NPR, the Texas Tribune, as well as The Times itself.Previously, I focused on digital strategy and training across The Times newsroom, working with many others to innovate in how we tell our stories in the mobile and social age. Before that, I was on the News Desk team helping oversee the weekend and evening-side digital report.Prior to The Times, I was part of a team overseeing story production and layout for The Washington Post's mobile and tablet apps. I also helped conceive and coordinate special display packages for The Post's mobile pages. In 2012, I was part of the team that helped launched a redesigned mobile homepage for the Post. From 1999 to 2012, I covered myriad topics as a reporter in Dallas, Indianapolis and in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C. My stories explored the performance of child-support collections under then-Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, the impact of infrastructure privatization under Gov. Mitch Daniels in Indiana and improprieties in the office spending of Maryland's House Speaker. I am the former National Secretary of the Asian American Journalists Association, a 1,400-member group that promotes newsroom diversity and leadership training. I've lectured on career development and digital media at colleges and universities across the country, including the University of Nebraska, New York University, the University of Texas, American University, Howard University and my beloved alma mater, Boston College.

2011 - 2013 ~2 yrs

What a pivotal moment in my career (and for the future of newspapers). The Dallas Morning News gave me the chance to work in a larger newsroom in a larger market. The Indianapolis Star provided me with the chance to work in a much larger market, and in a community far beyond Maryland and the Eastern Seaboard. I also bore witness to economic.

The Gazette was a good place to learn journalism. But I knew I needed experience at a daily newspaper. The Capital gave me that opportunity.I covered the 2003 Maryland legislature and then-Gov. Jan 2003 - Nov 2003

Staff Writer / County Government, Transportation

US

I officially started my journalism career out of graduate school. All of that education got me a job at the tiny Burtonsville Gazette. I still recall the job interview: It came at the end of August and I was wearing a heavy suit. By interview's end, I was completely drenched in sweat. Looking back, that experience was so, so formative in my career. I.
