Southampton And Liverpool

Member of the NOC Executive Board responsible for the full range of support and administrative functions, delivered across two sites in Southampton and Liverpool, which underpin the delivery of the Centre’s world-leading research and technology. In Southampton this includes hosting a full University of Southampton department with 330 staff and postgraduates (Ocean and Earth Sciences). My responsibilities encompass: business development, finance and business planning; human resources; health and safety; information technology; research contracts, facilities management; library and archive services; communications and public engagement together with governance, executive and science administrative support. The National Oceanography Centre employs 500 people with a budget of £45M.

Leading the collaborative innovation programme across the Northern Way, a collaboration funded by the three regional development agencies in the North of England. Working closely with a number of government departments and governmental bodies (BIS, DECC, Technology Strategy Board) and a wide range of external stakeholders from the very large, to SMEs, to sub regional governmental bodies. Programmes included Offshore Wind and Carbon Capture and Storage. Closure announced in June 2010 as part of UK Government spending cuts.

Loughborough

Member of the senior management team of Loughborough University. Responsible for the development and implementation of the University’s policy and strategy for Enterprise, leading to the promotion, embedding and development of the Enterprise dimension of the University. This included managing major relationships, the exploitation of the University’s IP, consultancy services, creation of spin out companies, the development of the University’s Science and Enterprise Park, managing the EPSRC Collaborative Training Account, HEIF and employer engagement.

Appointed Director of the Centre in August 2004. Prior to then responsible for establishing a new area of academic programmes from conception to delivery: a comprehensive enterprise education programme from first year undergraduate through to Doctoral level: the first of its kind in the UK. My particular diverse blend of education, skills and experience proved ideal for the leadership of this novel and rapidly expanding programme for students in the field of business creation. Initially responsible for all commercial, financial, administrative and asset management matters of the Centre. Set up and administered the infrastructure, financial and administrative support for this new centre. Established and operated the business planning process.

Melbourne, Australia

Responsible for the development of businesses to use excess nuclear weapons material in the civil fuel cycle as nuclear fuel (Nexus) and the development of a complimentary international waste repository (Pangea), see below. Worked closely with the UK, USA and Russian GovernmentsResponsible for the development and implementation of the worldwide commercial strategy for Pangea (an international waste repository project with projected total turnover in excess of $80,000M). In this project worked closely with the Australian Science and Technology Office and leading Australian geologists and industrialists. On loan from BNFL. During the early feasibility assessment of this project also responsible, within BNFL, for identifying and developing strategies for new business opportunities in the Former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe

Warrington

Responsible for establishing and running a new subsidiary to enter new spent nuclear fuel storage markets not previously addressed. Selected specifically because of creative, entrepreneurial and analytical skills.• Built a new business team.• Determined an acquisition strategy.• Established the product portfolio and development programme.• Concluded a Korean joint venture (John Major, PM, at the agreement signature ceremony).

Tokyo, Japan

Responsible for relations between the UK and Japan on all atomic energy matters.• Established close links with UK and Japanese industry and Government on a wide range of commercial and technical matters. • Kept Japanese Utilities supportive and fully engaged in the decision to proceed with the operation of Thorp (the UK’s Sellafield reprocessing plant), despite serious delays by the UK Government.• Personally interacted with the UK Prime Minister, UK and Japanese cabinet members, senior members of Japanese industry, including Chairmen and Presidents of the 10 Japanese electricity utilities to achieve UK nuclear industry objectives.• Invited to introduce the ten Japanese utility presidents to the Prime Minister, the Duke of Kent and others at the THORP opening celebrations.

Warrington, United Kingdom

Responsible for all issues on return of radioactive waste, including negotiation with overseas customers and the UK Government, plus liaison with UK Government departments on issues affecting reprocessing.
