About Thomas Ashley
All life on Earth exists near the interface between its solid surface and a thin layer of flowing fluids. Sediment transport processes mediate the evolution of this interface, giving rise to dynamic landscapes that shape society and stratigraphic architectures that record Earth’s history. The aim of my research is to promote effective stewardship of our physical environment by enhancing scientific understanding of fluid-driven sediment transport systems. I am interested in processes that span a wide range of scales, from the motion of individual sediment particles to the continent-scale organization of river systems driven by climate, tectonics, and lithology. My work is focused on unifying descriptions of transport and morphology using insight gained from laboratory experiments, field work, and mathematical modeling.
Listed skills include Mathematics, Presentation Skills, Physics, Git, and 31 others.

Postdoctoral Researcher
SCIENTIFIC EXPERTISE IN HYDROGEOMORPHOLOGY: Developed working knowledge of hydrologic systems. Primary research foci: (1) cohesive sediment transport processes including erosion, deposition, and flocculation in rivers and deltas, (2) physical evolution of river systems, including channel migration, aggradation, erosion, and stability through coupled interactions between flow, sediment transport and topography.PROJECT DESIGN AND LOGISTICS: Designed and executed flume experiments and field projects to address outstanding scientific questions. Prepared research proposals summarizing scientific objectives, approaches, expected outcomes, and budgetary requirements. Developed work plans, hired staff, and procured equipment and materials needed to execute projects. Oversaw execution of data acquisition campaigns involving multiple team members engaged in a variety of data collection tasks. Reviewed and evaluated data collection and management activities to ensure results were technically sound, results were reproducible, and scientific objectives were achieved in a timely manner. DATA ANALYSIS AND VISUALIZATION: Used Python to integrate complex datasets involving multiple concurrent data types. Developed predictive models using numerical, analytical, and empirical methods. Applied mathematical, numerical, and statistical models to analyze experimental data.REPORTS AND SCIENTIFIC COMMUNICATION: Prepared detailed investigative reports (including refereed journal articles). Provided timely editorial feedback for coauthors, and as an NSF Ad Hoc reviewer and journal reviewer for Geomorphology, Journal of Geophysical Research: Earth Surface, and Basin Research. Gave oral and poster presentations to communicate scientific findings at academic conferences and to collaborators. Taught outreach course on sediment transport for undergraduate engineering majors. Advised undergraduate research projects and scientific presentations.
Graduate Research Assistant
RESEARCH: Conceived and developed novel research projects, secured funding for scientific activities, executed research plan, analyzed results using appropriate technical methodology, published multiple peer-reviewed articles in high-impact scientific journals, presented results at professional meetings.COURSEWORK: Fluvial geomorphology, Sediment transport mechanics, Earth surface processes, Rates and timescales of surface processes, Principles of stochastic mathematical modeling, Continuum mechanics, Bayesian data analysis, Introduction to geological modeling, Linear algebra, Vector calculus, Applied teaching methods.
Research And Development Intern
Developed and applied a machine learning algorithm to identify contiguous sedimentary bodies in well logs. Presented project results at a joint meeting with Research and Business teams.
Front Of House Staff
Ski Instructor
Summer Intern
Made geologic maps and mineralogical logs during mining operations.
Summer Intern
Made geologic maps, logged mineralogy and geotechnical properties of drill cores through exploration and pre-feasibility phases of mine development.
