About Thomas Codd
I am an experienced Data Scientist with a broad background in Academia and the Private sector. I have worked with several languages (primarily R and python) in a variety of applications; from data analysis and automation, image analysis and Machine Learning training, to data cleaning and imputation/extrapolation. My current work is on a global nutrition project (Micronutrient Action Policy Support, a Bill and Melinda Gates funded research project) mainly involves the cleaning, analysis, and imputation of missing data in datasets using Machine Learning algorithms in R, although I have several personal projects on the go using Python and C#. I also have a strong GIS background, which has proven useful while undertaking some aspects of analysis in my current job due to my familiarity and ease in analysing geographically-linked data and producing map outputs.

Data Scientist
I work within the Micronutrient Action Policy Support (MAPS) project. This project, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, aims to create a web-tool used to help governments and NGO's identify and best react to micronutrient deficiencies in subsaharan Africa, at the national and sub-national level. Within the team I provide day-to-day expertise in a wide range of data-related tasks - from dataset cleaning and organisation to analysis, visualisation, extrapolation, and advanced imputation using open-access tools such as R and GitHub. I also do suitability assessments for the application of AI for certain parts of this work,as well as test, train, and apply Machine Learning algorithms to certain tasks. I also write and share functions to help streamline and improve the efficiency of time-intensive tasks such as food matching between datasets, to complete input-variable calculations more easily, and organise and output datasets in more user-friendly formats. These functions are maintained in the R package I lead the development of; NutritionTools.
Image Analyst
Identifying, interpreting and analysing changes on industrial sites using Very High Resolution (VHR) satellite imagery, and helping with the automation and training of Machine Learning AI processes to assist with this change detection. Researching and developing novel products and algorithms, catering to customer needs and requirements. Undertaking satellite imagery preparation tasks, including colour stretching, colour matching, orthorectifying and georeferencing the imagery. Interpreting and QAing LIDAR data.
Research Assistant
During this contract I was one of the interpreters producing the CORINE Land Cover Map, a European Environment Agency Project. Using custom software we identified changes in land use across the UK that have occurred since 2012. This was done using Satellite imagery from 2012 (IRS P6 and ResourceSat2 imagery) and 2017 (Landsat 8 and Sentinel 2 imagery), and required a keen eye for detail, as the map is interpreted manually without the aid of any automated algorithms.
Technical Project Assistant
In this role, I contributed to the production of a Validation Dataset of Burned Area for the European Space Agencies Fire CCI Project. This was done through the interpretation of Satellite Imagery and through the training of a Semi-Automatic Machine Learning Classification Algorithm. This position provided the backbone of my GIS and Remote Sensing experience and also provided opportunities to advance my data analysis skills, through the pixel-by-pixel analysis of hundreds of satellite images in R. This analysis was focussed around comparing different burned area indices and algorithms to the validated dataset I had just helped to produce.
Farmhand
Part time work during harvest and university holidays working as a farmhand. In this role I undertook a plethora of practical roles and responsibilities. During Harvest my main role is as a tractor driver, carting grain between the combine and the sheds. During this I was the main line of communication between the farm manager on the combine and the yard manager. Other roles included assisting mechanics and engineers with machinery repairs, maintaining the cleanliness of the sheds, operating other pieces of machinery (both mobile and stationary) and taking and analysing samples of wheat to check for water and protein content. In the autumn other roles included taking soil samples to be sent for analysis in the Kinsey labs in America.
Waiter
In this job I was able to assist the kitchen in many ways and integrate with customers. My main purpose was to fulfil the role of a waiter, however I also undertook several activities to assist in the kitchen, primarily preparing hot drinks and smaller items of food (scrambled eggs, toast etc.) but on occasion I did cook entire meals (English breakfasts).
Library Assistant
In this job I undertook a number of roles, from stacking shelves and processing books to lending them out. I was also trusted with closing up the library at the end of the day.
