In this role, I focus on the estimation of the distribution, abundance, and habitat selection of Roosevelt elk in the Karuk Tribe's aboriginal territory. I also investigate the effects of different fuels treatments on elk populations and biodiversity.

In this position I mainly conducted research on giant panda ecology, population genetics, and conservation through fieldwork, lab work, statistical analyses, and scientific writing/publication. • Set Transect Lines and conduct vegetation monitoring through line point intercept, canopy gap intercept, basal gap intercept, species inventory, and general habitat assessment measurements.
• Use GPS units to find and record site locations, take plot photographs with digital cameras, use advanced tablet computers to record data, and keep organized data sheets in the field.
• Dig soil pits and conduct soil analysis, as well as soil stability measurements on transect lines.
• Hike up to six miles a day off-trail and over rough terrain with heavy equipment to get to sites, and camp in the field for up to seven nights at a time.

• Conducted research and wrote a paper on salinity in the San Joaquin River Basin in California using previously recorded Electrical Conductivity and Total Dissolved Solids Measurements.
• Extensively used Microsoft Excel, Word, and ArcGIS to house and analyze data.
• Extensively learned and conducted salinity forecasts with the Watershed Analysis and Risk Management (WARMF) Program.
• Presented my results at a lab-wide poster session at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

• Conducted energy audits on the homes of local leaders and worked with them to promote energy efficiency.
• Filmed videos of energy efficiency benefits and success stories.
• Presented educational materials at workshops and helped to organize local outreach campaigns.

• Contacted Landowners to explain our research and gain permission to set up sites on their land.
• Set up and baited barbed-wire hair snares and camera traps to capture data on black bears
• Scrutinized barbed wire for hair samples and carefully collected them for later genetic analysis.
• Conducted habitat and vegetation analysis at sites.
• Learned to set foot-snares and was exposed to the tranquilization, measurement, and radio-collaring of black bears.
