The Impact On Belgian Banks Of A New Corporate Financing Model

Graduation project of the program: master after master Banking & Finance.Goal was to do research about hot topic in Finance, proposed by several well-known companies. I opted for the project of Roland Berger Strategy Consultants.The traditional corporate debt funding model in Europe is heavily based on bank lending, while a minority of funding needs is fulfilled via bond capital markets. The reverse holds in the United States. Since the introduction of Basel III, we have seen a slow drift towards a so-called two-legged lending model, whereby capital markets become more and more important in Europe too. Goal was to identify advantages and disadvantages of both financing models, provide a descriptive study on the recent evolution in Europe and the US, and model the impact of the shift towards the market-based model on Belgian banks' balance sheet. Further I had to think about the future role of banks in the funding process, their future business model and the implications for the government.

The final sprint in the master in commercial sciences is an internship at a company of choice. I Chose for Belfius bank and insurance as the job description was very broad. The first month was at a local office where I could obtain MIFID and other legal degrees, followed by optimizing portfolios of premium and private clients. The next two months I assisted the business cell of the Belfius network with different projects. During the full internship I was allowed to participate in meetings of the Business cell and the meetings of the portfolio advisors. I was also invited to every event and tuition.
