Academic Cardiothoracic and lung transplant surgeon, with expertise in ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI), lung recovery from uncontrolled Donation after Circulatory Determination of Death donors (uDCDs), formerly known as Maastricht Category 1 and 2 non-heart-beating donors for lung transplant, ex-vivo lung perfusion (EVLP), lung and organ allocation policies, clinical trials, entrepreneurship, and translational research through work with UNC's Clinical Translational Science Award (CTSA). Due to an ambulatory disability, I no longer perform surgery. I am Board-certified in Thoracic Surgery and I have an unrestricted license to practice medicine in NC. I teach medical students and residents, direct a funded laboratory, and work in Team Science. My lab funding has come from NIH, NCI, CF Foundation, DoD, industry and philanthropy. I have extensive experience mentoring investigators at a variety of levels, from students to senior faculty. I have served on 27 NIH study sections and have reviewed grants for agencies in other countries. I have written IDEs for the FDA and served as a consultant to the FDA on lung perfusion solutions. I have collaborated with Dr. Marie Muller, an acoustic scientist at NCSU, in the new and expanding field of quantitative lung ultrasound. Also collaborating with Dr. Juliane Nguyen, UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy in the use of novel anisotropic and auxetic hydrogel patches for delivery of therapeutics to static and moving organs.
