  • Southern Research Institute
    Power Systems Research Manager
Southern Research Institute Mar 2003 - Apr 2012
    Birmingham, Alabama
Dr. Gale managed several million dollars of research a year in the areas of combustion and air-pollution-control technology development, evaluation, and verification. He also managed research in the areas of advanced power system development and evaluation, and catalyst development and testing. Dr. Gale was heavily involved in the technical aspects of the research he managed as well as in the hiring and training of mechanical and chemical engineers, technicians, chemists and other technical personnel needed to accomplish the team mission. Dr. Gale obtained funding for, managed, and directed all aspects of an oxy-fired carbon-dioxide mitigation demonstration project on a 1.1 MW thermal coal-fired pilot facility, yielding a facility that was subsequently used to test carbon-sequestration technologies applicable to oxy-fired systems, which will operate with concentrated (i.e., >90%) carbon-dioxide stack gas, ready for long-term storage. In addition, Dr. Gale managed and directed the development of new and unique technologies for which patents were obtained or are pending. An example is the development of a bromine injection technology that takes benign calcium bromide and converts it into diatomic bromine gas as it is injected into the duct at a power plant to aid in the mitigation of mercury emissions. Another example is the development of a compact syngas cleanup system suitable for use in connecting small distributed biomass gasifiers to high-end use devices, such as gas turbines, fuel cells, and Fischer-Tropsch conversion units.
