I have been fortunate in my career to raise private monies for nationally known universities like Clemson and Virginia Tech, for an iconic world-renowned organization in the American Red Cross, and for several smaller institutions where my fundraising services most likely helped in a much larger way than my efforts in the more recognizable locations. My mentors have been invaluable. The donors that I formed relationships with are the treasures of my professional life, and I liked to think I have coached a few superstars in the fundraising field. Securing seven figure gifts is part of my resume; however, I have worked diligently for far less. I believe the most overrated question in our profession is, “What is the largest gift you were primarily responsible for?” Anyone who knows the fundraising realm understands that a gift is never secured through just one individual. Whether it is branding, culture, communication, face-to-face or new media interaction, board involvement, or just someone taking the time to simply, “ask,” there is always a host of complex reasons while successful individuals, corporations, and foundations bestow their treasure on any mission. Numerous people have expressed to me they would rather do just about anything else than raise funds. However, with the pure excitement that accompanies the feeling one has when you unravel what truly makes a donor passionate about your cause… I personally cannot imagine doing anything else. I live for the next campaign, the next goal, and the next gift secured by the team.While my first years out of college centered on public relations, I now have close to twenty years in the world of fundraising. I know I can lead. I know I can follow. Most of all, I know I would never be content in any other profession. After all, experience has taught me the two most important questions that any successful fundraiser must know. “Would you like to give? Do you know anyone else who would like to help our cause?”
