Tom Gregg is a senior United Nations official with two decades of on the ground experience engaging local communities and non-state armed groups on behalf of governments, the UN and NGOs. Tom has spent the last decade expanding access for health and humanitarian workers in select countries in South/Central Asia, Africa and the Middle East. He lived in the tribal areas of Afghanistan from 2005-2008 as the UN’s Head of the Southeast Region. Tom has a broad and deeply informed perspective on international and humanitarian affairs, as well as the global health agenda. Tom is a natural leader and team-builder and he’s built and led diverse teams based in New York, Geneva and a host of conflict-affected countries including Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, Nigeria and Syria. He has leveraged this global network to expand access to public health by negotiating safe passage for health workers. His experience gives him a vision for how best to engage in humanitarian and international diplomacy. Tom has a demonstrated track record in program management and donor engagement. His unique background informs his work as a strategist, and he has advised the World Health Organization, the UN, the Gates Foundation, the government of Norway and the private sector. Tom currently serves as a Senior Advisor to the UN Under Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs. In this role, Tom advises on expanding humanitarian access for the UN to communities residing in security compromised areas. Tom was previously Director of Global Projects at the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue, a Swiss-based international conflict mediation organization and a member of the Senior Management Team. Tom was formerly Associate Director at the Centre on International Cooperation (CIC) at New York University.Previously, Tom worked for the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations as a Special Assistant to the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, as Head of Region (Southeast Afghanistan) and in Political Affairs. Tom has also worked at the Australian Council for International Development and the Australian National University. He has written widely on topics including foreign policy, US-China Relations, and fly fishing in Afghanistan. Tom holds a Master’s degree in International Relations from the Australian National University where he was a Hedley Bull scholar.
