Senior Bridge Engineer undertaking design, assessments, feasibility and scoping, pricing, programming and staff management duties for the delivery of various Highways England (HE) Areas ASC Contracts including various Options, Feasibility and BD54 reporting and the production of various PTSI Test Plans. The Primary delivery to date was a 14 month study and a final report on why 50% of the significantly large bearings of a major 1.3k long twin deck box girder, Post Tensioned bridge in the SE of England had significantly degraded; what effect this was having on the wider structure; devise a repair and maintenance strategy to extend their serviceable lives in lieu of undertaking a replacement bearing design in 2020-21; scope an outline bearing replacement strategy. Other responsibilities included assisting and advising other Principal Engineers working on complex bridge problems with remote monitoring, data interpretation, precision surveying and the design of additional bridge wide monitoring. The detailed aspects and duties surrounding these works are numerous and better left to further discussion as and if required.

Senior Bridge Engineer undertaking design, assessments, feasibility and scoping, pricing, programming and staff management duties for the delivery of Highways England (HE) Area 10 ASC Contract.Some of the my main duties included various assessment and design responsibilities from conception through design and construction; programming and costing works including Whole Life Cost assessments; assisting, mentoring younger engineers and managing other office resources; managing complex design works delivered by external Mott MacDonald offices; lead the technical element of an intricate multi £million Compensation Event claim to a fully successful conclusion. Work delivered successfully to site included several schemes with the more notable including a £4m assessment, propping, Cathodic Protection and repair of two 34m long pre-stressed half joint bridges; the £11m upgrade of a complex motorway gyratory including slip road embankment modifications, bridge strengthening, new bridge installation along with the usual interfacing comms, stats, traffic management, Temporary Works and other aspects of the scheme; completing a full feasibility for the potential £3m replacement of a pedestrian footbridge on a sensitive and heavily constrained section of the network.

Conwy County Borough Council Offices

Senior Bridge Engineer & PM, under contract to CCBC (Conway County Borough Council) as the Designer for NMWTRA (North & Mid Wales Trunk Road Agent) for the delivery of Highway Structure and Infrastructure Maintenance and Minor Capital work accross North Wales. The structures portfolio comprises circa 950 Trunk Road Highway Structures. Some of the main objectives of this role have been the delivery of Maintenance and Minor Capital works, attracting and growing funding year on year, developing a structures data base and priority ranking tool for both bid and structural work prioritisation purposes, managing consultants for the delivery of various technical reports often resolving quite complex legacy issues, introducing new work techniques such as using Unmanned Air Vehicle surveying of mountainous areas of the network for multiple purposes, manage design and assist others in the delivery of various structural and tunnels related solutions from Scoping through Technical Approval and delivery on site.

Siemens Head Office, Manchester

As a Civil D&B Project Engineer and the EAN TWC (Temporary Works Coordinator) the role included managing and coordinating the civil design and site delivery elements of schemes. To provide a link and facilitate accurate communications between M&E, Civil Permanent and Temporary Work designers, the client NG (National Grid) and site construction staff. All within a frame work comprising JM & Sons, Siemens Power, Civil Designers and other Sub-Contractors and Consultants for the delivery of Primary 400kV substation installations and upgrades accross the UK.

Bridge Engineer employed by Atkins to carry out various management and design work within the Area10 Managing Agent contract. My time at Atkins splits evenly between leading the Principal Bridge Inspection team and as a design engineer in bridge design on completion of my Civil Engineering degree in 2004. Last six months at Atkins included the additional responsibility of designing and implementing the user end of Atkins nationwide H&S management system (SOS) that connected all site staff to a central control centre in Worcester. Here, qualifications, RAMS and other checks would verify that operative’s competency matched to the proposed level of work for safer working while allowing managers an up to the minute view of staff movements. The system featured in an NCE article in 2006.

As a Water Infrastructure Engineer on behalf of Welsh Water my responsibilities included: vetting and approving applications to Sewers for Adoption standards; the review and comment of designs to advise on and approve drainage designs, connections, diversions and build over proposals for private and large commercial schemes for adoption.

Highway Design Engineer attached to a planning team employed to provide access solutions to ‘enable’ constrained proposed developments. All design works to Highways Agency and Local Authority standards. The works included liaising with clients, in house and external planners, other professionals, statutory undertakers, suppliers and contractors through conceptual/final design and construction.

Cheadle, Manchester - Site Based

I joined Birse to maximise my setting out and site management experience during the remaining 11 months of the 15month sandwich year. My roles included Site Engineer for the construction of a £12m fast track private D&B warehouse and office development. I completed a second site engineering role as the senior engineer and stand in Site Agent on an £8m, two warehouse D&B development. Undertook site agent’s responsibilities for the retro installation of £2m worth of M&E, structural adaptations and fit out.

From Junior to Senior Site Engineer during the first 4 months of my degree sandwich year taken 1 year early. Engineer on what was the largest stone reinstatement scheme in Europe at the time. Rope Walks in Liverpool was an £11m city centre Improvement scheme comprising 7,000 m2 of stone cobble roads, kerbing and channels installation and 11,000 m2 of stone paving. I completed much setting out and resolved some quite complex design and logistical problems during my short contracted term. I re-engineered and managed the first successfully completed street featured in an NCE article in 2000.

Very hands on but also priced, planned and managed work from early on while dealing with Local Authorites and the usal array of proffessionals associated with small develeopment building works.
